I LOVE going to the Outback and ordering this side with my steak. I could eat these alone! This is a copycat recipe; one I have had saved but have yet to try. But if this recipe is a true copycat of what I have eaten at Outback, you will not be sorry!

1 (10 1/2 ounce) can beef broth
1/2 cup onion, diced
2 (16 ounce) cans small whole mushrooms, like button mushrooms (plus the juice of one can or jar)
1/3 cup Burgundy wine

Steps:

  • Place beef broth in a saucepan and simmer onion for 15 minutes.
  • Add mushrooms, along with juice from 1 can or jar and wine.
  • Simmer another 15 minutes.
  • Serve with steak.

These Outback Steakhouse-style fried mushrooms are dipped in buttermilk to bring out their delicious flavor.

8 oz whole fresh button mushrooms
½ cup whole wheat flour
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
¼ tsp dry mustard
¼ tsp paprika
½ cup buttermilk
for deep frying vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Combine whole-wheat flour, dry mustard, paprika, black pepper, and salt in a large ziplock bag. Alternatively, you can use a regular bowl or a paper bag when mixing the ingredients.
  • Place the buttermilk in a bowl. Dip the mushrooms at a time.
  • Place the mushrooms in the bag with the mixture.
  • Shake the bag to coat the mushrooms.
  • Heat 2 to 3 inches of oil in a deep fryer or saucepan at 375 degrees F.
  • Fry several mushrooms at a time until they turn golden brown on all sides.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

1 can beef broth ((10.5 ounce can))
1/3 cup burgundy wine

Steps:

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter.
  • When the butter melts, add mushrooms and onions.
  • Sprinkle mushrooms and onions with about 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  • Sauté mushrooms until they have browned and they have started to cook through.
  • Add red wine and beef broth.
  • Cook for a few additional minutes and allow the sauce to reduce.
