This German cookie recipe has become a Christmas tradition in our family, but is yummy year round. The combination of orange and chocolate is wonderful!

100 g semi-sweet chocolate baking squares
125 g butter or 125 g margarine
125 g sugar
1 egg
1 orange rind, shredded
200 g flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
100 g icing sugar
2 teaspoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Grate chocolate.
  • Cream butter or margarine and sugar. Add egg and shredded orange peel.
  • Sift flour and baking powder, and add to creamed mixture along with the grated chocolate.
  • You may knead the dough together by hand.
  • Form into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate 2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Roll out dough to 5mm thickness, and cut with cookie cutters of desired shape.
  • Transfer cookies to cookie sheets and bake 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Remove from sheets to a rack to cool.
  • Sift icing sugar. Stir in enough orange juice to make a glaze.
  • Glaze the bottom of each cooled cookie.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
¾ cup unsalted butter
½ cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon orange zest
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 ½ cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 ½ cups chopped pecans

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
  • Sift flour, baking powder and salt into and set aside. Cream butter, sugars, orange zest and vanilla extract together in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time beating well after adding each one. Add dry ingredients and stir until combined. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts and mix until well blended.
  • Drop dough by slightly rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart on cookie sheets. Flatten slightly. Bake cookies for 15 or 16 minutes or until golden. Cool on the cookie sheets.

2/3 cup butter or 2/3 cup margarine, softened
1 tablespoon grated orange rind
1 egg
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup baking cocoa
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup chopped pecans
1 (6 ounce) package semisweet chocolate morsels
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon grated orange rind

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350º.
  • Beat 1 cup sugar, butter, 1 tablespoon grated orange peel and the egg in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon.
  • Stir in flour, cocoa, salt, baking powder and baking soda.
  • Stir in pecans and chocolate morsels.
  • Shape dough into 1 1/2-inch balls.
  • Mix 1/3 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon grated orange peel.
  • Roll balls in sugar mixture.
  • Place about 3 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Flatten to about 1/2-inch thickness with bottom of glass.
  • Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until set.
  • Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet.
  • Cool on wire rack.

1 cup butter, softened
1-1/2 cups sugar
1 large egg, room temperature
1 teaspoon orange extract
2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2-1/2 teaspoons grated orange zest
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Beat in egg and extract. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Add orange zest to 1 half; add melted chocolate to the other half., Shape each portion into two 7x1-in. rolls. Wrap each and refrigerate 3 hours or overnight. , Preheat oven to 375°. Cut each roll down the center lengthwise. Reassemble rolls, alternating chocolate and orange halves. If necessary, wrap and chill until firm enough to slice., Unwrap and cut into 1/4-in. slices. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 5-6 minutes or until set. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons finely shredded orange peel
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup orange marmalade
6 ounces bittersweet chocolate
1 tablespoon shortening

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar. Beat until combined, scraping sides of the bowl occasionally. Beat in egg yolk and orange peel. Beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Using a 1 1/2-inch round cookie cutter, cut into rounds. Press your thumb into center and fill with 1/4 teaspoon orange marmalade.
  • Bake on parchment-lined baking sheets in a 375-degree oven for about 12 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool. In a small saucepan, melt chocolate and shortening over low heat. Dip half of each cookie in chocolate mixture. Place cookies on rack to set.
