Christmas is coming and everyone wants cookies and treats. I love these simple cookies that taste so festive and bright looking. They taste like a hot spiced tea, which is my favorite holiday drink.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 orange, zest of
1/4 cup orange juice (from zested orange)
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350º F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Beat 1 cup sugar with the shortening, egg, vanilla and orange zest. Add the orange juice, flour, soda and salt and stir until well combined.
  • Combine 1/3 cup sugar with 3 tbs cinnamon. Shape dough into walnut sized balls. Roll in cinnamon sugar and press onto prepared cookie sheets with a glass dipped in cinnamon sugar.
  • Bake 10-15 minutes until lightly golden.

1 lb powdered sugar
1/2-1 cup oleo
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 (6 ounce) can frozen orange juice, thawed (undiluted)
coconut or powdered sugar

Steps:

  • Mix crushed wafers with sugar.
  • Add melted oleo.
  • Add nuts; then add juice.
  • Stir well.
  • Make into balls and roll in fine coconut or powdered sugar.
  • Refrigerate.

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch nutmeg
3 egg whites, beaten
1/2 stick melted butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9- by 13-inch cookie sheet.
  • In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredient mixture. Spread the mixture thinly and evenly on the prepared cookie sheet. Bake until golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool. Break into shards. Use as garnish for Pumpkin Milk Shakes.

1 (1/4 ounce) package active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (105 degrees to 115 degrees)
1 cup milk, warm (110 to 115 degrees F)
3/4 cup orange juice
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1 tablespoon orange peel, grated
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
6 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons water
1 cup confectioners' sugar
4 teaspoons orange juice
1 teaspoon orange peel, grated

Steps:

  • Dissolve yeast in water.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine milk, orange juice, sugar, shortening, peel and salt.
  • Add 2 cups flour, yeast mixture and egg; mix well.
  • Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Place in greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1-1/4 hours.
  • Punch dough down and divide in half. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.
  • Roll each half into 15-in. x 7-in. rectangle.
  • For filling, combine sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over rectangle. Sprinkle each with 1 teaspoon water.
  • Roll up, jelly-roll style, starting with a short end. Seal edges.
  • Place with sealed edge down in two greased 8-in. x 4-in. x 2-in. loaf pans.
  • Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from pan and cool on wire racks.
  • Combine glaze ingredients; spread over loaves.

5 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons unsalted butter, well softened
1/3 cup Demerara sugar such as Sugar in the Raw
1 tablespoon finely grated fresh orange zest (from 1 large orange)
1 large egg white
1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 scant 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
Special Equipment
a pastry bag fitted with 1/2-inch plain tip (optional)

Steps:

  • Blend together butter, sugar, and zest with a rubber spatula. Add egg white and stir until combined well. Sift together flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt onto butter mixture and stir until flour is just incorporated. Chill dough, covered (or in pastry bag if using), until firm but not hard, about 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 325°F.
  • Pipe or drop 1/2-teaspoon mounds about 3 inches apart onto lightly buttered baking sheets and bake in batches until edges are golden, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool cookies on sheets until warm (about 2 minutes), then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
