These orange rolls are a little time-consuming to prepare, but my family tells me they're definitely worth the extra effort. They bake up feather-light with a sweet and tangy flavor. We love them on Easter morning. -Bernice Morris, Marshfield, Missouri

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
1 cup warm milk (110° to 115°)
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons grated orange zest
5-1/4 to 5-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
ORANGE ICING:
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 teaspoon grated orange zest

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add the milk, sugar, butter, salt, eggs, orange juice, orange zest and 3 cups flour; beat until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. , Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. , Punch dough down; roll into a 16x10-in. rectangle, about 1/2 in. thick. Cut into 10x3/4-in. strips; roll lightly and tie into a knot. Place on greased baking sheets; tuck the ends under. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. , Bake at 400° for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to cool on wire racks. Combine icing ingredients; drizzle over rolls.

30 Minute Orange Knots image

Delicious orange knots that you can make in under 30 minutes! Your family will love these delicious breakfast treats.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 16 oz. can refrigerated biscuits
3 T. butter (melted)
2 T. granulated sugar
1 T. orange zest
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 T. freshly squeezed orange juice
1 tsp. orange zest

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix granulated sugar and the 1 T. of orange zest together in a small bowl.
  • Cut each biscuit in half and roll each half into a rope. Tie each rope in a loose knot. Tuck the ends underneath the knot. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  • Brush tops of knots with melted butter and then dip buttered tops in orange sugar mixture.
  • Bake knots for 8-10 minutes, watching carefully so the sugar doesn't burn.
  • While knots are baking make an orange glaze. Mix powdered sugar, orange juice, and the remaining orange zest together.
  • While knots are still warm brush them with orange glaze. Then let them cool for about 2-3 minutes and serve.

4 medium granny smith apples
2 pkg. refrigerated breadsticks, 11 oz. each
2 navel oranges
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • 1. Unroll bread stick dough; cut strips in half. Put 3 to 4 apple slices in middle of each strip of dough. wrap and tie in a knot. arrange knots in a 9 x 13 inch pan.
  • 2. Grate 1 tsp. of orange peel; set aside. Juice the oranges; pout 2/3 cup juice into bottom of pan but not over the knots. In a small bowl, mix grated peel, sugar and cinnamon. Spoon over the knots. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or til golden brown. Serve warm with a drizzle of syrup from pan. Makes 12 servings, or 24 knots.

Baking is my favorite pastime, and I normally have my freezer well-stocked with breads, muffins and cookies. This recipe for rolls with a refreshing orange flavor has been in the family as long as I can remember. We especially enjoy them for breakfast and brunch.

¼ cup warm water (105 degrees to 115 degrees)
1 cup warm milk (110 to 115 degrees F)
½ cup shortening
⅓ cup sugar
¼ cup orange juice
2 tablespoons grated orange peel
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs eggs
5 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the milk, shortening, sugar, orange juice and peel, salt, eggs and 3 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1-1/4 hours. Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide in half. Shape each into 12 balls. Roll each into a 10-in. rope. Tie into a knot and tuck ends under. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees F for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks. Combine icing ingredients; drizzle over rolls.
