OLD FASHIONED

Old Fashioned image

The invention of the drink is frequently (and probably inaccurately) credited to a bartender at the Pendennis Club, in Louisville, Kentucky, who around the turn of the 20th century reportedly made the drink for Colonel James E. Pepper, a member of the club and by some accounts a prominent bourbon distiller.

Yield Makes 1 cocktail

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 scant teaspoon simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters, plus more to taste
1 half dollar-sized slice orange peel, including pith
2 ounces good-quality rye or bourbon
1 maraschino cherry

Steps:

  • In old-fashioned glass, combine simple syrup and bitters. Fill glass halfway with ice, then stir about a dozen times. Add enough ice to fill glass. Squeeze orange peel over glass to extract oils, add peel to glass, and add whiskey. Stir just until drink is cold and alcoholic bite has softened, about a dozen times. Garnish with cherry, swizzle stick, and straw.

OLD-FASHIONED LEMONADE

Old-Fashioned Lemonade image

This is one of the first recipes that I added to my first recipe file that was my very own, back when I was in junior high school. I have used this recipe ever since whenever I want to make that classic summertime necessity....lemonade. And it has never failed me yet.

Categories     Beverages

Time 10m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

6 cups cold water
2 cups lemon juice (8 to 10 lemons)
1 cup sugar
ice cube
lemon slices (optional) or maraschino cherry (optional)

Steps:

  • To get the most juice, let lemons stand at room temperature (or microwave lemons on High for just a few seconds before squeezing them). Then roll the lemons on a counter while pushing down firmly (to break the tissues inside) to release more juice.
  • Mix water, lemon juice, and sugar in a large pitcher until sugar is dissolved.
  • Refrigerate about 3 hours or until thoroughly chilled.
  • Pour lemonade over ice cubes in a tall glass. Garnish each serving with a lemon slice and maraschino cherry.
  • NOTE - Individual tastes for sweetness vary, so feel free to adjust the sugar to suit taste preferences.

OLD FASHIONED LEMON BALM AND LEMON VERBENA LEMONADE SYRUP

Old Fashioned Lemon Balm and Lemon Verbena Lemonade Syrup image

There are numerous recipes for lemon balm lemonade, and I have an old English recipe myself that I make regularly - but, if you find that it is sometimes a little "light" on the lemon flavour, add some lemon verbena for a super charged lemon kick! I have made this several times now and it is so refreshing and zingy, perfect for a hot summer's day. Once the syrup is made, it lasts for several weeks in the fridge, or several months in a cool dark place if you add the optional citric and tartaric acid. Serve with cold sparkling water and slices of lemon and a sprig of either lemon balm or lemon verbena.

Provided by French Tart

Categories     Punch Beverage

Time P2DT5m

Yield 2 Litres

Number Of Ingredients 6

450 g caster sugar
600 ml water
1 lemon, cut into two halves
10 large lemon verbena leaves
10 large lemon balm leaves
1/4 teaspoon tartaric or 1/4 teaspoon citric acid

Steps:

  • Place the sugar, lemon halves and water into a saucepan and heat until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  • Add the lemon verbena and lemon balm leaves and boil for 2 minutes; leave to cool. Add the citric or tartaric acid if using at this stage. Allow to cool and then cover and allow to infuse for 24 to 48 hours, depending on what strength you require. (I have left this for 3 days sometimes too, for a real lemon zing.).
  • Sieve through a fine mesh or colander, discarding the lemon halves and the herb leaves - then pour into clean and sterile bottle/s; seal tightly and store in a cool dark place for several months or in the fridge for several weeks.
  • To use: 1 part syrup to 4 parts water or sparkling water, to taste - add more for a stronger lemon flavour or less for a more delicate flavour. Add ice, a slice of lemon and some lemon balm or lemon verbena leaves as a garnish.

OLD-FASHIONED LEMONADE - REVIEW BY ERGOANNIE - ALLRECIPES.COM
2019-05-09 It would be helpful to put the number of ounces, cups, or whatever when writing a recipe that is all about balance. 6 lemons -( huge ones, big ones, medium, small, tiny?) Is too broad for me. Size is subjective and amount of juice in one lemon could be 1/4 the amount of another. I ended up with sour sour lemonade. Added sugar, then water but it never was just …

OLD-FASHIONED LEMONADE - REVIEW BY JAJAM - ALLRECIPES.COM
2014-08-31 Great standard lemonade, calling for equal measure of lemon juice and sugar. For those who read only the ingredient list, the recipe actually does call for one cup of juice to the cup of sugar. Although I like mine a touch less sweet, it is probably a five for most lemonade lovers. If you like extra tart, hold back on some of sugar and give it a taste, then add to your liking.
