Old Fashioned Brownies image

This Old Fashioned Brownie recipe is almost a century old, and comes with a 5 star rating. I think you'll agree that this is one superb recipe for a traditional brownie.

Provided by Michaela Kenkel

Categories     Dessert/Bar/Chocolate

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 ounces unsweetened chocolate (bitter chocolate without sugar)
4 Tablespoons shortening (butter works, too)
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups flour
pinch of salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Melt shortening and chocolate together in a saucepan on the stove.
  • When melted and smooth, add sugar and beat well with a wooden spoon.
  • Add vanilla and eggs and beat again.
  • Stir baking powder and salt into flour and add to mixture.
  • If using, mix in nuts.
  • Pour into a 9x13 baking pan and bake for exactly 25 minutes. These are not good if overcooked. **I use a convection oven. I decreased the baking time to 20 minutes and they were perfect**
  • ***Recipe doesn't call for greasing pan, so I didn't. They came out fine. ***
