This creamy farmhouse salad dressing is tangy, flavorful, and so easy to make. It goes great on a salad with sturdy greens like romaine or iceberg lettuce.

Ingredients

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup sour cream
3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2-3 tablespoons milk (see note)

Steps:

Combine all ingredients except milk in a mason jar and shake well to combine.
Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time, stopping when the dressing reaches your desired consistency.
Adjust salt and pepper to taste, if desired.

This is an interesting and tasty recipe that was in my mom's collection, she got it from her aunt, who found it in a Fanny Farmer Cookbook, circa 1923. It's an oldie but goodie. So called French Dressing was developed in the early part of the 20 th century, and started with using a French vinaigrettee with ketchup added. It's a recipe that has multiple versions and keeps evolving, but it's very much American. One cooking note: This version of French dressing has a good sharp flavor, so less dressing is needed, it's something to keep in mind while tossing the salad.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons ketchup
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon mustard, ground
cayenne pepper (to taste)
3 drops hot pepper sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar

Steps:

Combine all the ingredients, and shake in a lidded container to mix.

This is a great tasting salad that is easy to prepare. The main ingredients of lettuce, broccoli and bacon are normally on hand.

Ingredients

1 head iceberg lettuce, torn into bite-sized pieces
1 head fresh broccoli florets
¾ cup mayonnaise
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
1 pound bacon

Steps:

Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble, measure out 1 cup and set aside.
In a large bowl, combine the lettuce and broccoli.
Prepare the dressing by whisking together the salad dressing, sugar and vinegar.
Pour dressing over lettuce mixture and toss evenly to coat. Sprinkle with bacon and refrigerate until chilled. Serve cold.
