Gift jar directions at bottom of the recipe - add onto a recipe card and attach to the gift! Or skip the gift making and indulge yourself with this treat!! NOTE: This recipe is to be prepared one QUART size wide mouth canning jar and will yield 12 scones.

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup instant oats
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup dried cherries
10 tablespoons butter, melted
2/3 cup milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg white
3 tablespoons water

Steps:

  • Creating the Gift in a Jar:
  • Wash and thoroughly dry a 1-quart wide-mouth canning jar.
  • Layer the ingredients in the jar as listed above starting with the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, oatmeal, brown sugar and then cherries - make sure to press firmly with a flat bottomed object after each addition; make the layers as level as possible.
  • Secure the lid and decorate as desired; attach the instructions for making these cookies found below.
  • OAT AND CHERRY SCONES GIFT TAG:
  • Additional ingredients to be added by the recipient: 10 tbsp melted butter, 2/3 cup milk, 2 eggs, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 egg white and 3 tbsp water.
  • OAT AND CHERRY SCONES INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Preheat oven to 375.
  • In a large bowl combine the butter, milk, eggs and vanilla extract.
  • Add the contents of the jar and still until just moistened; let stand 5 minutes.
  • Shape dough into 2 6-inch rounds and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.
  • With a floured knife, score each round into 6 wedges without cutting through the dough.
  • Combine the egg white and water and brush over each round.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Cool for 5 minutes, cut into scones and serve warm; or cool completely and store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

2 1/2 c all purpose flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1 Tbsp granulated sugar
1/8 tsp salt
1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips (or dark chocolate chips)
1/2 c dried cherries, diced

Steps:

  • 1. Sift flour and baking powder together in mixing bowl. Add sugar and salt and toss together to blend well. transfer mixture to 1-quart wide-mouth jar.
  • 2. Place chocolate chips in small plastic zip-type bag and seal. Add to jar. Place cherries in small palstic zip-type bag and seal. Add to jar. Seal jar.
  • 3. Decorate jar and attach gift tag with the following instructions: Chocolate Chip-Dried Cherry Scones Makes 8 scones. Scones 1 jar Chocolate Chip-Dried Cherry Scones Mix 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted gutter, chilled 2 large eggs, at room temperature 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream Egg Wash 1 large egg yolk 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream 2 teaspoons granulated sugar Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or nonstick liner. Add flour mixture from jar mix to work bowl of food processor fitted with steel blade. Cut butter into pieces and add to bowl. Pulse until butter is cut into tiny pieces. Add chocolate and cherries from jar and pulse three times. Mix 2 eggs and 34/ cup cream together. Add mixture through feed tube with processor running. Process until dough forms ball. Transfer dough to lightly floured work surface. Pat into a 1/2-inch thick rectangle. Cut out two 6-inch circles. Cut each circle into quarters. Place scones on baking sheet 2 inches apart. Mix egg yolk and 2 tablespoons cream together. Brush tops of scones with wash and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 13 to 14 minutes or until light golden. Cool on rack.

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces and chilled
1/2 cup dried cherries
1 large egg, beaten
1/4 cup buttermilk, plus more for brushing
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract
Fine sanding sugar, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, oats, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut butter into oat mixture until the mixture resembles a coarse meal; whisk in dried cherries. In another medium bowl, mix together egg, buttermilk, and vanilla and almond extracts until well combined. Add egg mixture to flour mixture; mix until well combined.
  • Turn out dough onto a lightly floured work surface; roll out to a 1-inch-thick 8-by-6-inch rectangle. Cut biscuits into eight 2-by-3-inch rectangles using a sharp knife; transfer biscuits to prepared baking sheet. Brush biscuits with buttermilk and sprinkle with sanding sugar.
  • Transfer biscuits to oven and bake until tops are lightly browned, 18 to 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool slightly before serving.

1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup oat flour
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
1 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup dried cherries, chopped
1/3 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup finely chopped pecans, toasted
TOPPING:
1 tablespoon coarse sugar
1 tablespoon old-fashioned oats

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400°. Whisk together first 7 ingredients; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk, stirring just until moistened.
