The New York Sour (Bourbon-Red Wine Cocktail) Recipe image

Yield Makes 1 serving

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 ounces rye or bourbon whiskey
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1/2 ounce fruity red wine (such as Shiraz or Malbec)

Steps:

  • Combine 2 ounces rye or bourbon whiskey, 1 ounce fresh lemon juice, and 1 ounce simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, cover, and shake until outside of shaker is frosty, about 30 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Gently pour 1/2 ounce fruity red wine (such as Shiraz or Malbec) over the back of a spoon held just above the drink's surface so wine floats on top.

  • Add the whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white (optional) into a shaker with ice and shake hard until well-chilled.
  • Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
  • Slowly pour the red wine over the back of a bar spoon so that the wine floats on top of the drink.

Number Of Ingredients 7

50ml rye whiskey
25ml lemon juice
2 tsp maple syrup
dash orange bitters
1 tbsp egg white
ice
20ml red wine

Steps:

  • Pour the whiskey, lemon juice, maple syrup and bitters into a cocktail shaker. Stir the egg white with a fork to loosen it, then add it to the shaker. Shake really well to froth up the egg white. Add a good handful of ice and shake again.
  • Once the outside of the shaker is really cold, double strain into a glass filled with ice.
  • Slowly pour the red wine on top and leave to settle for a few moments - the wine will rise to just under the frothy egg white.

  • Peel the apples with a paring knife, being sure to leave some of the apple (about 1/4 inch thick) attached to the peel. You should have about 2 cups peels. Reserve the apple itself for another use, such as a pie or crisp. Toss the peels with the sugar in a container with a lid. Cover and refrigerate for 3 days.
  • Combine 2 ounces (1/4 cup) apple brandy, 3/4 ounce (1 1/2 tablespoons) lemon juice, 1/4 to 3/4 ounce (1/2 tablespoon to 1 1/2 tablespoons) simple syrup, and 1 egg white in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake very, very well. Strain into a cocktail glass and slowly layer 1/2 ounce (1 tablespoon) apple shrub over the drink. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. Serve the New York Sours at once.
