30 ml Cognac (brandy)
22.5 ml Grand Marnier liqueur
5 ml Absinthe verte (green)
15 ml Lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
7.5 ml Sugar syrup (rich) 2 sugar to 1 water
2 Angostura or other aromatic bitters
15 ml Chilled water (omit if using wet ice)

Steps:

  • SHAKE all ingredients with ice and strain into ice-filled glass

As I mentioned in my hangover helper post on Wednesday, the hair of the dog has long been considered an effective means of treating this kind of self-inflicted wound. Here's an 1887 version of a morning fog cutter, from that year's edition of Jerry Thomas' Bar-Tender's Guide: the Morning Glory Cocktail.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 ounce rye whiskey
1 ounce VSOP cognac
1/2 teaspoon sugar (or 1 tsp. simple syrup)
1/2 teaspoon curacao or Grand Marnier
2 dashes bitters (Boker's or Angostura; see note)
1 dash absinthe (or substitute Pernod or pastis)
1 ounce chilled club soda, to taste (or, what the hell, champagne)
Strip of lemon zest, for garnish

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients except club soda and lemon zest in a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir well until chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or small highball glass. Top with club soda; twist lemon zest over drink and use as garnish.

The morning glory is a classic cocktail that does not go unnoticed. From the late 1800s, discover why this rye whiskey and cognac recipe remains a hit.

1 ounce rye whiskey
1 ounce cognac
1 teaspoon curaçao (orange)
1 teaspoon simple syrup
1 dash absinthe
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
1 to 2 ounces club soda
Garnish: lemon twist

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • In a mixing glass filled with ice, pour the rye whiskey, cognac, curaçao, absinthe, simple syrup, and bitters.
  • Stir well , for at least 30 seconds.
  • Strain into a chilled old-fashioned glass filled with fresh ice.
  • Top with club soda; as much as 2 ounces to taste.
  • Twist a lemon peel over the glass and drop it into the drink. Serve and enjoy.
