One of the oldest American cocktails, the mint julep originated in Virginia and was popularized in Kentucky. The two states have bickered over the proper way to prepare one for the past 200 years. No matter: It soon became the signature cocktail of the American South.

SOUTHERN BELLE MINT JULEP
A mint julep is the perfect respite on a hot day. Vivek and I have gone to the Steeplechase, the Nashville version of the Derby, where we fell in love with this quintessential Southern favorite. I add a dash of chile in the form of jalapeno in honor of all the awesome Southern belles I have met who pack a punch and have a dash of spice to their personalities.

MINT JULEPS
Sit on the front porch in your rocking chair on a sultry afternoon and sip on one or two of these. The proper way to serve a mint julep is in a frozen silver goblet, but you can use glasses instead--just use the most elegant ones you have! You can make the syrup ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for whenever the julep mood strikes you.
