My grandmother used to make this refreshing drink for those hot Oklahoma summer days. The family would sit on the front porch relaxing while sipping this drink. Here in California, where lemons, oranges and mint are so abundant, my family has found equal enjoyment sitting in the shade and drinking a tall glass of this thirst-quenching cooler.

Yield about 15 servings.

Number Of Ingredients 8

2-1/2 cups water
2 cups sugar
1 cup lemon juice (about 6 lemons)
1 cup orange juice (about 6 oranges)
10 mint sprigs
1 bottle (32 ounces) ginger ale, chilled
Cold water
Ice cubes

Steps:

  • Place first five ingredients in a large saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Cover; remove from heat and let steep until cool. Strain. Cover and refrigerate. , To serve, fill chilled glasses or a pitcher with equal amounts of fruit juice, ginger ale and water. Add ice and serve immediately.

2-1/4 cups water
1/2 cup coarsely chopped fresh mint
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 medium lemons, sliced
1/2 cup lemon sherbet, softened
1 liter ginger ale, chilled

Steps:

  • For mint ice cubes, combine the water, mint and lemon juice; pour into 2 ice cube trays. Freeze until set. In a pitcher, combine the lemons and sherbet; slowly stir in ginger ale. Add the mint ice cubes.

Steps:

  • In large saucepan, stir together water and sugar; bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes; let cool.
  • Stir in orange, grapefruit and lemon juices; chill until ready to serve.
  • Pour over ice cubes in tall glasses.

12 cups chilled orange juice, fresh
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, more if desired
1 bunch of fresh mint
2 lemons, thinly sliced
2 limes, thinly sliced
1 large orange, thinly sliced
ice cube

Steps:

  • Mix orange juice and 1/2 cup lemon juice in a tall pitcher. Add half of mint and bruise with the back of a spoon against side of the pitcher.
  • Taste, adding more lemon juice, if desired. Mix in lemon, lime and orange slices.(can be prepared 4 hours ahead at this point and refrigerate).
  • Add ice to the pitcher and mix. Pour into glasses. Garanish with remaining fruit.
