RESTAURANT STYLE SALSA

Restaurant Style Salsa image

Recipe video above. Just like what you get at your favourite restaurant and those jars sold alongside corn chips at the grocery store.... but it's better, healthier and cheaper! The fresh flavour is so, so good. Make it chunkier or smoother, to your taste.

Provided by Nagi

Categories     Dip

Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/4 cup chopped onion ((white, brown or yellow))
1 tbsp jalapeño pepper (, seeds removed, roughly chopped (fresh best, canned ok))
400g / 14 oz canned crushed tomato (, best quality)
4 oz / 120g canned diced green chiles ((Note 1))
1/4 cup (packed) cilantro/coriander (, roughly chopped)
1/2 tbsp+ lime juice
1 clove garlic (, minced)
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin

Steps:

  • Place onion and jalapeno in the food processor first, then add remaining ingredients (start with 1/2 tbsp lime juice).
  • Blitz to desired consistency - I like mine pretty smooth because you get better flavour out of the onion etc.
  • Taste test with corn chip for salt and lime. Adjust if necessary.
  • Refrigerate 1 hour before serving with corn chips, or other dippers (see in post for suggestions).

  • To prepare Mexican salsa recipe | Indian style Mexican salsa | fresh homemade tomato salsa | brush ½ tsp oil all over the capsicum. Pierce with a fork and hold over an open flame. Roast until the skin blackens from all over. You can even roast the capsicum in an oven by placing them on a greased baking tray. Roast them for 20 minutes at 200'C, rotate and roast them for another 20 minutes. Remove from the flame, immerse it in water and allow it to cool. Another way is to place the capsicum in a food-grade plastic bag or place the roasted peppers on a cutting board, then invert a large bowl over the top of them. The bag/bowl traps the steam inside that will help in peeling them easily. Once cooled, remove the burnt skin on the capsicum with your hands. Deseed it and chop it finely. Keep aside. // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1570706400435-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot0]); }); // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot1 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot1").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot1]); });
  • To makeMexican salsa recipe | Indian style Mexican salsa | fresh homemade tomato salsa | blanch the fresh tomato, boil enough water in a deep pan. Take 6 medium-sized ripe, red tomatoes and rinse them. We have used regular Indian tomatoes but, you can also make use of Italian tomatoes or Roma tomatoes if available Scoop out and discard the eyes of the tomatoes using the tip of a sharp knife. Make a criss-cross cut at the base of each tomato. The "X" cuts help in easy removal of skin after blanching. Put the tomatoes in boiling water for 3 to 4 minutes or until the skin separates from the tomatoes. // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot2 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot2").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot2]); }); // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot3 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot3").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot3]); }); Using a slotted spoon remove the tomatoes from hot water. Immerse them in cold water for some time. Refreshing prevents overcooking of tomatoes due to internal cooking and helps in retaining the bright red color. When the tomatoes are cooled, peel and discard the skin and seeds. Chop on a chopping board. Keep aside.
  • To prepare Mexican salsa recipe | Indian style Mexican salsa | fresh homemade tomato salsa | heat the remaining 3 tsp of oil in a broad non-stick pan. Once the oil is hot, add onions. // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot4 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot4").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot4]); }); // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot5 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot5").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot5]); }); Sauté on a medium for 2 to 3 minutes or until soft and translucent. Add the capsicum. Authentic salsa is made using chile pepper but, since it is not easily available in India, we are making use of capsicum. Sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes. You can make the salsa with any kind of tomato, but the firm, fleshy ones will hold up the best. Canned fire-roasted tomatoes can also be added to offer rich roasted tomato flavor in the Mexican salsa. Add salt. The tomato salsa would taste flat without the salt. // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot6 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot6").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot6]); }); // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot7 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot7").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot7]); }); Add sugar. The sugar is only needed if your tomatoes are very tangy. Add chilli powder. Depending on the heat level you prefer, increase or decrease the amount of chilli powder. Add oregano. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 5 minutes or till the tomatoes are soften while stirring occasionally. Add chillies in vinegar. You can even make use of regular vinegar or lemon juice. // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot8 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot8").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot8]); }); // Call display() to register the slot as ready // and refresh() to fetch an ad. var adslot9 = googletag.defineSlot('/1035919/Rcp_Step_BlockAd', [336, 280], "adslot9").setTargeting("test", "infinitescroll").addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1548320692495-0'); googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot9]); }); Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
