This is a recipe from one of my friends in New Mexico from 1960. She got it from an extension course she took in 1936.

Ingredients

2 Tbsp knox plain gelatine
1/2 c cold water
2 c real maple syrup
1 c powdered sugar
1 c chopped nuts
2 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

1. Dissolve gelatine in a dish of cold water that is placed over a dish of hot water. Stir to help dissolve.Place dissolved gelatine in a saucepan. Place saucepan over medium heat and add the Maple syrup. Heat until blended, about 1 minute..remove from heat and beat with a whisk until mixture begins to look creamy. Gradually whip in the powdered sugar, vanilla and chopped nuts. Allow to stand a few minutes before dropping onto waxed paper or parchment paper.

Preheat oven to 375° degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone liners. Set aside.
In a large bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugars with the paddle attachment until fluffy and smooth, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and add in the vanilla, mixing well. Lastly, add in the finely ground pecans and flour and beat until combined and a soft dough comes together.
Using a Tablespoon-size cookie dough scoop, portion out a ball of cookie dough and gently flatten it in your palm. Place an unwrapped Hershey's Kiss in the center, then roll the dough around the Kiss, enclosing it into a ball. Dredge the cookie dough into the confectioners' sugar and place 1-2" apart on the baking sheets.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, rotating pans halfway through baking time to ensure even cooking, or until cookies appear set and dull in color. Allow to cool completely on the baking sheets, then dredge again in the remaining confectioners' sugar.

In a food processor fitted with the steel blade, pulse the pecans until they are finely chopped. Add the powdered sugar, flour and salt, and pulse again. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula if necessary.
Drop in the butter and shortening chunks, and pulse a couple of times. Add the egg and pulse again, just until the mixture starts to come together. Roll the dough into 1- to 1 1/2″ balls with your hands.
Place the balls on the baking sheet, spacing them 1″ apart; give them a light pat on the top. Bake until the cookies are golden brown, about 15 minutes. You may need to bake two batches.
