This impressive-looking dessert is at the top of my list of speedy standbys. It's simple to make because it starts with a boxed brownie mix. Then the nutty brownie layers are dressed up with a fluffy frosting that has a rich creamy texture and irresistible maple taste. -Amy Flory, Cleveland, Georgia

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 package brownie mix (13x9-inch pan size)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
2 cups heavy whipping cream
2 teaspoons instant coffee granules
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons maple flavoring
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Chocolate curls or additional walnuts, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare batter for brownie mix according to package directions for cake-like brownies. Stir in walnuts. Pour into two greased 9-in. round baking pans. , Bake 20-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted 2 in. from the edge comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely., In a large bowl, beat cream and coffee granules until stiff peaks form. Gradually beat in the brown sugar, maple flavoring and vanilla. , Spread 1-1/2 cups over one brownie layer; top with second layer. Spread remaining cream mixture over top and sides of torte. Garnish with chocolate curls or walnuts if desired. Store in the refrigerator.

1/2 cup half-and-half cream
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup chocolate syrup
1 tablespoon instant coffee granules
12 freezer pop molds or 12 paper cups (3 ounces each) and wooden pop sticks

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, whisk whipping cream, half-and-half, maple syrup, chocolate syrup and coffee granules until coffee is dissolved. , Fill molds or cups with 1/4 cup cream mixture. Top molds with holders. If using cups, top with foil and insert sticks through foil. Freeze until firm.

  • In a large bowl combine 2 cups of the flour, the cocoa powder, and the yeast; set aside. In a medium saucepan heat and whisk together the next five ingredients (through salt) just until warm (120°F to 130°F) and butter almost melts. Add milk mixture to flour mixture; add egg. Beat with a mixer on low 30 seconds, scraping bowl frequently. Beat on high 3 minutes. Stir in as much of the remaining flour as you can.
  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead in enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough that is smooth and elastic (3 to 5 minutes total). Shape dough into a ball. Place in a lightly greased bowl; turn to grease surface of dough. Cover; let rise in a warm place until double in size (about 1 hour).
  • While dough is rising, in a medium saucepan bring heavy cream to boiling; reduce heat. Boil gently, uncovered, 12 to 14 minutes or until reduced to 1/2 cup, stirring occasionally. Stir in 1 Tbsp. butter. Cool 10 minutes. Gradually whisk in 3/4 cup maple syrup. For icing, remove 3 Tbsp. of the syrup mixture to a small bowl; stir in powdered sugar and enough milk to make a thick drizzling consistency; cover and set aside.
  • Punch dough down. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into quarters. Cover and let rest 10 minutes. Meanwhile, in a small bowl combine granulated sugar and cinnamon. Generously grease a 10-inch fluted tube pan.
