3 ripe mangoes, pitted, peeled and sliced
2/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup sugar
2 cups milk
1 pinch salt
2 cups ice cubes

Steps:

  • In blender, combine mangoes, condensed milk, sugar, milk and salt; blend until smooth.
  • Add ice, 1/4 cup at a time, blending about 15 seconds after each addition. Serve immediately.

Many years ago, when I was a kid in New York, we used to get these at Victor's Cuban restaurant. Years later, Victor's had become an elegant restaurant--no more batidos from the window for kids who arrived on roller skates. Nothing could be simpler or more refreshing on a hot day. All these years later, I still think they're better sucked through a straw. For those watching calories, use skim milk.

This Batido de Mango (Cuban Mango Shake) is made with just 5 ingredients - frozen mango, banana, coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, and shredded coconut flakes. Easy to make, creamy, and tastes like a tropical paradise!

2 cups coconut milk ((full-fat or lite))
3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk (or more to taste)
2 cups frozen mango (cubed)
1 medium banana
1 tablespoon shredded coconut flakes (plus more for garnish)

Steps:

  • Into a high-speed blender, add the coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, frozen mango, banana, and shredded coconut flakes.
  • Blend until smooth and creamy. If you're looking for a thinner consistency, add 1/2 cup of water and blend again until desired consistency.
  • Serve the batido and top with more shredded coconut flakes. Enjoy!

Tropical fruits such as mangoes, papayas, bananas, guavas, and coconuts are combined with milk, ice and sometimes sugar to create a Cuban milkshake called a *batido*. This Key West shake is a cultural hybrid, however, because it also contains vanilla ice cream.

6 ounces skim milk
2 ounces cream of coconut
1 cup cubed mango
1 cup low-fat vanilla ice cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons grated coconut, toasted

Steps:

  • Place milk, cream of coconut, and mango in a blender.
  • Pulse to mix well.
  • Add ice cream and vanilla.
  • Process on high until well mixed and frothy.
  • Pour milkshake into 2 glasses.
  • Sprinkle toasted coconut on top of milkshake.
  • NOTE: Cream of coconut is popularly marketed as "Coco Lopez" and is highly sweetened. You'll find cream of coconut in the supermarket drink mixer section. If instead you use coconut cream, such as that marketed by "Ocho Rios", you should add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the milkshake. Coconut cream will be in the baking section of your supermarket.
