This creamy stew is a thick mixture of potatoes and other vegetables that's sure to warm you on the chilliest of winter days.

3 quarts water
8 large potatoes, peeled and sliced
4 large carrots, diced
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 small onions, chopped
⅓ cup butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon paprika
2 cups heavy cream

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, heat the water and stir in the potatoes, carrots and celery. Cook 15 minutes, or until tender but firm. Remove from heat. Drain and set aside, reserving liquid.
  • Place the onions and butter in the large saucepan. Over medium heat, slowly cook and stir 10 minutes, or until the onions are tender. Mix in the flour, salt, pepper, paprika and heavy cream. Mix in the potato mixture. Continue cooking and stirring, adding the reserved liquid a tablespoon at a time, until the mixture has reached a desired consistency.

1/2 cup water
1-1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
2 tablespoons canola oil
3 cups shredded cabbage
3 cups chicken broth
1 can (15-1/2 ounces) black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes with onions, undrained
1 cup sliced celery
1 cup tomato juice
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Place the sweet potatoes and water in a 2-qt. microwave-safe dish. Cover and microwave on high for 6 minutes or until tender; drain. , In a Dutch oven, saute chicken in oil for 8-9 minutes or until juices run clear. Add the cabbage, broth, peas, tomatoes, celery, tomato juice, pepper, salt and sweet potatoes. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until heated through.

1 ⁄2 cup chopped onion
5 cups chicken broth
2 sweet potatoes, peeled
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 ⁄2 cup heavy cream
salt and pepper
Special Equipment: Slow Cooker

Steps:

  • 1. Cut chicken into 1 inch cubes. Add olive oil and chicken to a large skillet over medium-high to high heat, browning well, about 4 minutes each side. When meat is almost browned, add onions to cook just until they sweat. 2. Transfer chicken and onions to a slow cooker set to low. Add some of the chicken broth to the skillet the chicken was cooked in, and use a spatula to scrape the bottom, breaking up any glaze the chicken may have left in the pan. Pour over chicken and onions in slow cooker, and then pour in remaining chicken broth. 3. Cut sweet potatoes into 1⁄2 inch cubes and add to the cooker, along with poultry seasoning. Stir all. 4. Cover and let cook 6-8 hours, depending on when you are ready to serve. Stir in the heavy cream and salt and pepper to taste. 3 garic cloves, minced
¼ tsp dried thyme
½ tsp dried oregano
1 cup fresh spinach
½ cup heavy cream
salt and pepper, (to taste)
xantham gum, (to desired thickness starting at ⅛ teaspoon)

Steps:

  • Place the chicken stock, carrots, celery, onion, chicken thighs, rosemary, garlic, thyme, and oregano into a 3-quart crockpot or larger. Cook on high for 2 hours or on low for 4 hours.
  • Add salt and pepper, to taste.
  • Stir in spinach and the heavy cream.
  • Sprinkle and thicken with xantham gum to desired thickness starting at ⅛th teaspoon. Continue to whisk until mix and cook for another 10 minutes.

1 (2 to 3 pound) whole chicken, cut into pieces
1 ⅔ teaspoons seasoned salt
water to cover
1 cup chopped onion, divided
¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
¼ cup chopped celery
1 ½ cups chicken broth
1 cup water
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 cube chicken bouillon
1 ½ teaspoons white sugar
1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 pinch seasoned salt
ground black pepper to taste
1 cup quartered potatoes
1 cup sliced carrot
1 cup heavy cream

Steps:

  • Wash chicken thoroughly, dry, and sprinkle with 1 2/3 teaspoons seasoned salt. Place in a Dutch oven and add enough water to cover. Add 1/2 cup chopped onion, bell pepper, and celery. Cover and cook over medium heat for 30 minutes.

1 cup dry marsala wine
salt and pepper, to taste
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Steps:

  • Add oil to slow cooker and spread around the base.
  • Add chicken to bottom of slow cooker.
  • Layer mushrooms and seasonings on top, and pour wine over the top.
  • Add lid to slow cooker and cook on high for 3-4 hours (depending on your slow cooker - they can vary wildly) until chicken is 155 degrees internal temperature.
  • Remove chicken and mushrooms from slow cooker, set aside.
  • Stir in cream and whisk vigorously until thickened.
  • Add chicken and mushrooms back to slow cooker, add lid, and cook another 20-30 minutes, until chicken is 165 degrees internal temperature.
