HOW TO MAKE A LONDON FOG LATTE

How to Make a London Fog Latte image

A warm and cuddly drink made with citrussy Earl Gray tea, vanilla, honey, and steaming milk. Add a bit of lavender if you want, too, for even more cozy-factor! Made dairy-free with oat milk or almond, but feel free to use the milk you like!

Provided by Kare for Kitchen Treaty

Categories     beverages

Time 7m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/2 cup water
1 Earl Gray tea bag
Pinch culinary lavender (optional; I usually make it without)
2 teaspoons honey (or to taste*)
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup of your favorite milk (I prefer oat milk for these)

Steps:

  • Place the tea bag in a mug and add the lavender if using. Let steep for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bag or, if you added lavender, pour the tea through a strainer then back into your mug.
  • Stir in the honey and vanilla, adjusting both if you like for more or less sweetness or vanilla flavor.
  • While the tea steeps, heat your milk. I use an electric frother, but you can also heat it on your stovetop until steaming but not boiling, stirring frequently. Froth with a hand-frother if using.
  • Pour warmed milk into tea mixture and stir to combine. Spoon any froth over the top and serve.

EASY LONDON FOG LATTE

Easy London Fog Latte image

A London Fog Latte is a mixture of Earl Grey tea, steamed milk, and vanilla syrup. The name comes from the drink's appearance -- murky like a dense London fog -- and the Brits' famous love of tea! Here's how to make a delicious homemade version.

Provided by Kate MacDonnell

Categories     Drinks

Time 6m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 Earl Grey tea bag (or loose leaf tea)
8 ounces water
½ cup milk (any kind)
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 spoonful honey (or white sugar)
Dried lavender (optional)

Steps:

  • Brew a strong cup of Earl Grey tea. Let it steep for 3 minutes, or follow the instructions on your tea container. Then remove the tea bag or filter out the loose leaf tea.
  • Steam your milk. If you don't have a steamer, you can heat the milk on the stove or in the microwave. Then whisk it until you get a good amount of foam.
  • Pour the milk into the mug on top of the tea. Stir in the vanilla extract and honey. Then add a spoonful of milk foam to the top.
  • Garnish your drink with a little dried lavender (optional) and enjoy!

  • For Loose Leaf Tea: Add the tea and dried lavender to a tea pot, empty tea bag or tea ball. For Tea Bags: Add the tea bags and lavender to a mug or small bowl.
  • Heat water in a kettle until boiling or almost boiling. (Note: I prefer the water somewhere around 190-200 degrees F, but I have an electric kettle that lets me choose the setting).
  • Add the water to the tea pot, or a mug if using a tea bag/ball. Steep according to tea instructions (my brand says 3 minutes for 8-16 ounces). If you’re not sure, err on the side of longer since the milk will dilute the flavor of the tea.
  • While the tea is brewing, combine the milk and vanilla. Steam and froth (or heat in the microwave or a saucepan if you don’t have a milk steamer).

  • While the tea is steeping, simmer milk in a small saucepan on the stove. Using a handheld frother, froth the warm milk until it is fluffy and cloud like (about 30 seconds).*
  • When the tea is done steeping, strain the tea leaves or remove the tea bags. Add sugar and vanilla. Stir until dissolved.

  • Set a medium pot over high heat and add the water. When the water begins to boil, turn the heat to low and add the tea bags. Let the tea steep until it's as dark and strong as possible (about 5-7 minutes).
  • While you're waiting for the tea to steep slice open the vanilla bean pod and scrape the seeds out using the back of a paring knife. Set the pod and the seeds aside.
  • Add the milk, the vanilla bean seeds and the whole vanilla bean pod to the pot and stir gently with a spoon until the mixture reaches a simmer. Keep the heat low to prevent the mixture from boiling and to maintain a low simmer. Let the mixture simmer for about 4-5 minutes over low heat, stirring every minute or two.
