LEMONHONEY ELECTROLYTE DRINK, LOW SUGAR, SCD

LemonHoney Electrolyte drink, low sugar, SCD image

This is an SCD legal & low sugar electrolyte drink, clear enough for scope prep uses. The ratio of sugar and salt were calculated using the WHO oral rehydration solution recipe as a template, so this is much lower sugar than most recipes. The odd flavor of this salt to sugar ratio of oral rehydration solutions, can be helped...

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup minus 1 tbsp. + 1.5 tsp water
1 tbsp. + 1.5 tsp. fresh lemon juice
1 tsp. honey
scant 1/8 tsp. himalayan pink salt
OPTIONAL:
a slice or two of fresh peeled ginger, for flavor
a few drops rosewater

Steps:

  • 1. The lemon juice adds potassium. The Himalayan pink salt is preferred as it adds a wide range of minerals for electrolytes. If you only have sea salt use that. Or table salt may also be used, but it will not have the same wide array of electrolyte minerals, but that is fine. The sodium is most important. If flavoring with ginger, simmer the ginger in the water, to infuse with flavor. If you are using this for scope prep, strain/filter the water afterwards to remove any fibers that loosened into the water. Let water cool. If drinking on a scope prep day, also strain/filter the lemon juice with an unbleached coffee filter, to remove any pulp and sediment.
  • 2. Once cool, measure the ingredients (remeasure the water and add more as necessary to account for any boiled off), then stir the ingredients together, mixing until dissolved. (Do not heat the honey or lemon, as this changes the sugars.) May add a few drops of rosewater, if that flavor is desired. Store refrigerated up to 48 hours, or freeze until use.
  • 3. If you prefer a sweeter drink, closer to Gatorade in sweetness, see my SCD & scope friendly Apple Lemon Electrolyte Drink recipe. https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/drink/other-drink/apple-lemon-electrolyte-drink-scd-scope-prep.html?new=1
  • 4. Do not give honey to infants under 1 year. If you want to replace the honey, replace it with 3 heaping Tbsp. of Martinelli's apple juice (not sparkling or unfiltered). Reduce the water amount by 3 level Tbsp.
  • 5. If on the SCD for medical reasons, remember to always verify that commercial products (such as the Martinelli's apple juice in this recipe) is still being produced in an SCD legal manner.

APPLE LEMON ELECTROLYTE DRINK, SCD SCOPE PREP

Apple Lemon Electrolyte Drink, SCD scope prep image

For those with IBD on the SCD who have to do scope procedures, you know why having a "clear/see through liquid" Gatorade alternative (that's not red), is so important. This has been helpful when asked to use the prep method where you mix a bottle of MiraLAX with 64 oz of Gatorade! Filtered chicken broth and this (also...

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup minus 1 tbsp. and 1 tsp. water
1 tbsp + 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
1 cup martinelli's apple juice (not sparkling or unfiltered)
scant 1/4 tsp. himalayan pink salt
OPTIONAL FLAVORINGS:
sliced, peeled fresh ginger
cinnamon stick (ceylon cinnamon preferred)
cloves
allspice berries
few drops rosewater

Steps:

  • 1. Always verify ingredients & brands are (still) SCD legal. 4 recipes of this makes 64 fl oz., with similar amounts of sugar as Gatorade. The lemon juice provides potassium. The pink salt provides extra minerals for electrolytes. If you only have sea salt, use that. Table salt can still be used, though it won't have as wide a range of electrolyte minerals. However, the salt itself is the most important electrolyte.
  • 2. If you want extra flavoring, boil the water with your choice of: a slice of peeled ginger (leave out ginger if later using the drink to make jello or gummies), cinnamon stick, cloves, allspice berries. Let steep for awhile to intensify flavors. Strain/filter the water afterwards, to ensure all sediment is removed. An unbleached coffee filter is good for this, especially if using the drink for scope prep.
  • 3. Once water is cooled, measure out the required amount, adding more water if necessary to make up for any evaporated off. If using the drink for scope prep, filter the lemon juice through an unbleached coffee filter, to remove any pulp and sediment. Mix all the ingredients together. If people like the flavor, a couple drops of rosewater may be added. Store refrigerated up to 48 hours, or freeze until use.
  • 4. May be made into popsicles, jello, or gelatin "gummies," for variety, on scope prep day. See my gelatin gummy recipes. It can be used in place of Gatorade. Of the homemade electrolyte drink options that work for scope prep, this is most preferred by my kid. Lemon Recharge by Knudsen company is a commercial option that seems closer to SCD than Gatorade. My kid likes the flavor. If you want a low sugar recipe based off ratios of WHO oral rehydration solution recipes, see my LemonHoney Electrolyte drink recipe. https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/drink/other-drink/lemonhoney-electrolyte-drink-low-sugar-scd.html?new=1
