One of the easiest recipe to prepare, especially when there is a lack of time, Jeera Aloo Recipe, Aloo Jeera or Zeera Aloo Recipe is a flavourful, delicious and irresistible dish of baby potatoes and cumin seeds.

500 g Mini baby potatoes (You can use regular potatoes cut into small pieces if baby potatoes are not available )
2 tbsp Oil
2 tsp Cumin seeds
1 tsp Green chilli (chopped)
2 tsp Crushed coriander seeds
1 tsp Crushed red chilli or Chilli flakes
1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
2 tsp Dry mango powder
1/2 tsp Roasted cumin powder
Salt (To taste)
2 tsp Lemon juice
Fresh coriander (For garnishing)

Steps:

  • Boil the potatoes with 2 tsp salt until they are slightly softened but not mushy.
  • Peel the potatoes once they cool down.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Once the oil is really hot, add cumin seeds and let them crackle for a few seconds.
  • Add green chilli and fry for a few seconds.
  • Add crushed coriander seeds, chilli flakes, turmeric powder, dry mango powder, roasted cumin powder and salt and fry for a few seconds.
  • Now add the potatoes and cover and cook on low heat for 10-12 minutes.
  • Squeeze lemon juice and mix well.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander.
  • Serve hot with Dal, Rice or Parathas.

Simple yet delicious aloo jeera fry is one of the best quick Indian dinner recipes that can be made in minutes and paired up well with almost all Indian breads. This easy vegan recipe of jeera aloo uses routine Indian curry spices. However, what sets it apart from other aloo curry recipes is its dry yet delicately spicy taste and finely balanced mixture of spices that bring out unique aroma of pan fried jeera (zeera, cumin) seeds. It's simply irresistible.

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 medium Potatoes, boiled, peeled and chopped into cubes
1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds (jeera)
1/2 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
1 tablespoon Cumin-Coriander Powder
1 Green Chilli, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon Dry Mango Powder or Lemon Juice
2 tablespoons Oil
2 tablespoons finely chopped Coriander Leaves
Salt to taste

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a non-stick pan or a kadai over medium flame. Add cumin seeds; when they start to crackle, add green chilli and sauté for 30-40 seconds.
  • Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, cumin-coriander powder, dry mango powder and salt (If you have added salt while boiling potatoes, then taste one boiled potato piece and add salt only if required.)
  • Mix well.
  • Add boiled potato pieces.
  • Mix well until potato pieces are evenly coated with masala. Cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Turn off the flame. Add coriander leaves and mix well. Transfer prepared aloo jeera fry to a serving bowl and serve hot with poori or paratha and plain curd.

1 ½ teaspoon Cumin Seeds
2 teaspoon Coriander Seeds
½ teaspoon Fennel Seeds
2-3 Dried Red Chilies
½ teaspoon Dry Mango Powder
1.1 lb Baby Potatoes (boiled and peeled)
1 ½ teaspoon Cumin Seeds
2-3 Green Chilies (slit)
½ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
1 teaspoon Ginger (grated)
2-3 tablespoons Oil
Juice of 1 lemon
Salt according to taste

Steps:

  • Start with dry roasting cumin seeds, coriander seeds, fennel seeds and dried red chilies until fragrant.
  • Then, add the dry roasted spices and ½ teaspoon dry mango powder to the blender and blend to a coarse powder. The Jeera Masala is ready to use, set it aside.
  • Heat oil in a heavy bottom pan. When the oil hot enough, reduce the flame to medium and add the cumin seeds and green chillies. Allow the cumin seeds to crackle for few seconds until fragrant, does not burn.
  • Add grated ginger and sauté for few seconds.
  • Then, add turmeric powder and cook for few seconds making sure it does not burn. Keep the flame medium as to avoid burning.
  • Then add boiled baby potatoes, salt and toss very well, cover and cook on low for 3-4 minutes. Tip: Let the potato sear for few extra minutes to give nice crispy golden layer.
  • After cooking boiled potatoes for few minutes, add ground jeera masala powder and mix. Cook on medium low for a minute only, cooking for too long may burn the masala.
  • Finally, add lemon juice (or lime juice) and chopped cilantro leaves and toss.
  • Serve hot with bread of choice, or dal rice or even with pulao rice.

6 nos Potato (Medium size)
¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
1 tsp Red Chili Powder
1 tsp Coriander Powder
½ tsp Amchoor Powder (Dry Mango Powder)
1 tsp Salt
2 tbsp Coriander Leaves
2 tbsp Ghee ((or cooking oil))
1 tbsp Cumin Seeds
2 nos Green Chili (finely chopped)
1 inch Ginger (julienned )

Steps:

  • Wash and take potatoes in a vessel. Place it in pressure cooker and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  • Allow the pressure to release naturally and take out the cooked potato, drain water. Add cold water and peel the potatoes.
  • Cut the potatoes into medium size cubes and set it aside.
  • Heat fhee in a pan. Add cumin seed and allow it to sputter.
  • Then add chopped green chili, ginger and saute for a min.
  • Next, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder and amchoor powder. Mix the spices well.
  • Now, add the cubed potatoes to the pan along with salt and toss well with the spices.
  • Allow the potato to get cooked in low flame with all the spices for about 2 mins.
  • Finally garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
