Contest-Winning Festive Tossed Salad image

With its unique medley of fruits and festive look, this tossed salad is a holiday tradition at our house. Our three grown daughters have come to expect it. One forkful reminds us of all the things we can be thankful for. -Jauneen Hosking, Waterford, Wisconsin

Number Of Ingredients 13

1/3 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup canola oil
2 to 3 teaspoons poppy seeds
10 cups torn romaine
1 medium pear, chopped
1 medium apple, chopped
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1/2 to 1 cup chopped cashews
1/4 cup dried cranberries

Steps:

  • For dressing, place first five ingredients in a blender; cover and process until blended. While processing, gradually add oil in a steady stream. Add poppy seeds; pulse just until combined. , To serve, place remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Toss with dressing.

Jeanne Bice's Christmas Salad image

Old Santa would like this salad: it is red and white, just like he is! It's a variation of the good old cinnamon-apple jello salad with a ribbon of enhanced cream running through the middle. Delicious and so easy to make. It's perfect for your Christmas table. Recipe is from Bice's new book, "Quacker Factory Christmas."

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/4 cup red cinnamon candies
1 (3 ounce) package cherry Jell-O
1 cup hot water
1 1/2 cups sweet applesauce
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1/2 cup nuts, chopped, choose your favorite
1/2 cup celery, chopped
1/2 cup mayonnaise

Steps:

  • Melt the candy in the hot water. Add jello and dissolve well. Add applesauce. Put half of mixture in a jello mold.
  • In a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, nuts, celery, and mayonnaise. When the first layer of jello is set, put the nut and cream cheese mixture in the mold as the next layer. Then add the remaining jello layer.
