My family has been making this traditional Italian cookie for years. My family expects these every Christmas, but they are good anytime!

Number Of Ingredients 10

3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons shortening
2 large eggs, beaten
1/4 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
3/4 cup sesame seeds

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Sift flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a bowl; set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, blend butter and shortening.
  • Add eggs, milk and vanilla.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients, making a soft dough.
  • Divide dough into 4 pieces.
  • Roll each piece into a long roll, about a 1/2-inch diameter; cut into 2-inch pieces.
  • Roll each piece in sesame seeds.
  • Place 1-inch apart on a baking seet.
  • Bake 20-25 minutes, until lightly golden brown.
  • Cool on wire racks.
  • Store in airtight containers.

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
3 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-3/4 cups sesame seeds
3/4 cup 2% milk

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add 1 egg at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well., Turn onto a lightly floured surface, knead 10-12 times or until smooth. Divide dough into 8 portions. Shape each portion into a 24-in. log. Cut logs into 2-in. pieces., Place sesame seeds and milk in separate shallow bowls. Brush pieces with milk, then roll in sesame seeds. Place 2-in. apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 350° until set and bottoms are lightly browned, 7-9 minutes. Cool for 2 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
5 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
5 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons milk
5 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream the shortening, butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture. , Drop by tablespoonfuls 3 in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Brush with milk; sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake at 400° for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to wire racks to cool.
