Steps:
- Place the nuts in a dry skillet (no oil) over medium heat. Heat, shaking the pan and stirring often with a wooden spoon, until the nuts are fragrant and golden brown or one shade darker, about 3 minutes for pine nuts and 4 to 5 minutes for harder nuts like pecans, walnuts and almonds. Stay at the stove because the nuts can easily burn! Remove immediately from the heat and transfer to a plate to stop the cooking.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the nuts on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for about 5 minutes for pine nuts and 7 to 8 minutes for harder nuts like pecans, walnuts and almonds, until fragrant and golden brown or one shade darker, stirring once. Do not stray far from the oven, since the nuts can go from toasted to burned quickly. Remove immediately and transfer to a plate to stop the cooking.
- Use immediately. Or, allow to cool completely and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 week and refrigerated at least 2 months. (You also can extend the life by freezing nuts.)

Steps:
- in the oven:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Arrange the nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet. Place in the middle rack of the oven and toast for 10 to 15 minutes, until nuts turn golden brown. Stir a few times during toasting so the nuts in the middle toast as quickly as the ones at the edges of the pan.
- on the stovetop:
- Sauté the nuts in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the nuts start to turn golden brown. Transfer to a plate and cool.

- Oven method. Toasting nuts in the oven is the best method when you need to toast a lot of nuts at once. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Stovetop method. When I only need a handful of nuts for a recipe, or to throw on top of a salad, I prefer to toast them in a skillet. Simply pour the nuts in a dry skillet and place over medium heat.
- Microwave method. This is a great method for toasting smaller amounts of whole nuts, as well as blanched or sliced nuts. Pour the nuts out on a paper-towel-lined plate and spread them into a single layer.
