Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches make a delicious quick, yet delicious meal and are part of my idea for the perfect picnic.

1 loaf French bread
1/2 pound sliced smoked ham
1/2 pound sliced smoked cheese
1 cup lettuce leaves
1 cup butter (softened)
3 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 medium onion (minced)
3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425º F. Mix together ingredients for sandwich spread in a medium bowl until well-combined. Set aside.
  • Slice loaf of French bread in half lengthwise and place on a rimmed baking sheet.
  • Spread the inside of both halves of bread liberally with the sandwich spread.
  • Begin layering ham, cheese, and lettuce onto one half of the bread. Top with the other half of bread and place into the preheated oven for 5 minutes, or until the sandwich has heated throughout and the cheese has reached the melting point you prefer.
  • Remove from oven and slice in the middle. Then, slice each of the halves in half again until you have four pieces.

2 kaiser rolls, split

  • Spread mayonnaise over rolls. Layer roll bottoms with cheddar cheese, bacon, ham and mozzarella cheese; replace tops. , Wrap sandwiches in foil; place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350° for 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted.

¾ cup melted butter
1 ½ tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ tablespoons poppy seeds
1 tablespoon dried minced onion
24 mini sandwich rolls
1 pound thinly sliced cooked deli ham
1 pound thinly sliced Swiss cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • In a bowl, mix together butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, poppy seeds, and dried onion. Separate the tops from bottoms of the rolls, and place the bottom pieces into the prepared baking dish. Layer about half the ham onto the rolls. Arrange the Swiss cheese over the ham, and top with remaining ham slices in a layer. Place the tops of the rolls onto the sandwiches. Pour the mustard mixture evenly over the rolls.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the rolls are lightly browned and the cheese has melted, about 20 minutes. Slice into individual rolls through the ham and cheese layers to serve.

3 pounds thinly sliced deli ham (about 40 slices)
2 cups apple juice
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup sweet pickle relish
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
1 teaspoon paprika
12 kaiser rolls, split
Additional sweet pickle relish, optional

Steps:

  • Separate ham slices and place in a 3-qt. slow cooker. In a small bowl, combine the apple juice, brown sugar, relish, mustard and paprika. Pour over ham. , Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or until heated through. Place 3-4 slices of ham on each roll. Serve with additional relish if desired.

I made 36 of these for our neighborhood Holiday House Hop Party. They were a huge hit last year so I searched for a recipe to present again this year. I bought a good deli ham and had it shaved, I think it's easier to bit into and enjoy. You can use as much ham & cheese as you like. If it fits on the buns, go for it! The buttery mustard sauce is amazing! I do not add the poppy seeds, they look pretty but nobody likes speckled teeth! I tripled the recipe but only doubled the sauce and still had a tiny bit left over. Go ahead and slather it all on, these are yummy! Inspired by recipe from Bunsinmyoven.com

1 (12 count) package kings hawaiian rolls
18 slices swiss cheese, 1/2 slice per sandwich
16 ounces sliced ham, per 24 sandwiches, I use a 1/2 # for 12 rolls. Use a good deli ham
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon stone ground grainy mustard, use a good brown grainy mustard
1 teaspoon poppy seed (optional)
2 teaspoons onion flakes, dried
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • On low heat, in a small sauce pan add butter, mustard, poppy seeds, onion flakes & Worcestershire sauce. Heat until butter is melted and onion hydrated, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat & set aside.
  • Slice all of the rolls in half and place the bottom halves in a 9x13 baking dish or foil lined baking sheet. Lightly brush butter sauce on bottom half of rolls, you don't need much.
  • Divide the shaved ham slices and cheese among all the bottom half of the sliced rolls. Cover with the top half of roll.
  • Spoon the buttery mustard sauce over the tops of the sandwiches. Cover with foil and refrigerate until ready to bake.
  • Let sit overnight or at least one hour.
  • Pre-heated oven to 350°F.
  • Bake on the middle oven rack, covered for 10 minutes, remove foil, bake for an additional 5 minutes (total of 15 minutes baking time) until warmed through and the cheese is gooey and melty. Add an additional minute or 2 if needed.
