HOW TO MAKE HASH BROWNS

How to Make Hash Browns image

Looking for a recipe for hash browns that don't taste like raw potato? These are crispy on the outside yet perfectly cooked on the inside.

Provided by Erica Walker

Categories     Breakfast

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 4

3 large russet potatoes
4 tablespoons butter
Kosher salt (to taste)
pepper (to taste)

Steps:

  • Scrub potatoes and place in stockpot. Do not peel or remove brown spots. Parboil the potatoes by placing them in a large pot. Cover the potatoes with cold, salted water and bring to a boil. Boil for 10 minutes.
  • Drain and rinse potatoes with cold water until easy to handle. Remove any bruised or brown spots with a knife. Using a box shredder or food processor, shred potatoes.
  • Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat or 350 degrees. Place potatoes in an even layer over the butter and cook until a golden-brown crust forms on the bottom (5-7 minutes). Flip potatoes and cook until crust forms on the other side.
  • Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Good old fashioned restaurant-style hash browns. Perfect with hot pepper sauce and ketchup!

Provided by your mom

Categories     Side Dish     Potato Side Dish Recipes     Hash Brown Potato Recipes

Time 35m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 medium russet potatoes, shredded
½ medium onion, finely chopped
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 cup oil for frying, or as needed
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Rinse shredded potatoes until water is clear, then drain and squeeze dry. Place shreds in a bowl, and mix in the onion, flour and egg until evenly distributed.
  • Heat about 1/4 inch of oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. When oil is sizzling hot, place potatoes into the pan in a 1/2 inch thick layer. Cover the whole bottom of the pan, or make separate piles like pancakes. Cook until nicely browned on the bottom, then flip over and brown on the other side. It should take at least 5 minutes per side. If you are cooking them in one big piece, it can be cut into quarters for easier flipping.
  • Remove from pan, and drain on paper towels. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately.

COPYCAT MCDONALD'S HASH BROWNS RECIPE

Copycat McDonald's Hash Browns Recipe image

McDonald's hash browns are iconic and super easy to make at home. Make a double or triple batch, and store the extra hash browns in a freezer-safe bag.

Provided by Lindsay D. Mattison

Categories     Breakfast

Time 1h25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

10.5 ounces russet potatoes
3 cups water
3 tablespoons kosher salt
1 tablespoon granulated white sugar
2 tablespoons potato flour
1 tablespoon corn flour
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Canola oil, for frying

Steps:

  • Peel the potatoes and discard the skins, placing the potatoes in a bowl of cold water to keep them from discoloring.
  • Meanwhile, bring 3 cups of water to a boil with the salt and sugar in a medium saucepan. When the water is boiling, grate the potatoes through the large hole of a box grater and add them to the boiling water. Cook for three minutes.
  • Remove the potatoes to a strainer and run them under cold water to stop the cooking process.
  • Transfer the potatoes to a cheesecloth-lined strainer and squeeze out most of the excess water. There should be some water remaining to help bind with the flour, but the potatoes should not be dripping wet.
  • Place the strained potatoes in a medium bowl and mix with the rice flour, corn flour, onion powder, and white pepper.
  • Form four patties about 1/4 cup each and shape them into large ovals.
  • Freeze the patties for one to three hours, until they're hardened all the way through.
  • In a large sauté pan, heat an inch of oil over medium-high heat until it's shimmering.
  • Carefully add the potato patties to the hot oil, splitting them into two batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  • Flip the hash brown halfway through, cooking for 4 to 5 minutes per side until they're golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  • Remove the hash brown to a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Serve hot.

HASH BROWN PATTIES

Hash Brown Patties image

These homemade hash brown patties are super crispy and insanely delicious. The perfect accompaniment to any breakfast style sandwich!

Provided by Chris

Categories     Breakfast     Brunch

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 medium sized White Potatoes, (grated on a box grater (approx 7oz/200g EACH))
1 Shallot, (peeled & grated)
2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
1 tbsp Butter
1 tbsp Plain/All Purpose Flour
1/4 tsp Salt, Black Pepper

Steps:

  • Add grated potato to a mixing bowl and pour in cold water. Swish around with your hands and squeeze the potato to help remove the starch.
  • Drain water and place potato shreds onto a cloth above a bowl. Add the grated shallot then wrap everything into a tight ball and squeeze out as much water as physically possible. Place potato/shallot into a clean/dry bowl.
  • Add 1 tbsp flour and 1/4 tsp salt and black pepper. Use a spatula to combine. At this point the salt will draw out a small amount of moisture from the potato, just enough to glue with the flour to stick the potato shreds together. Divide potato into 6 then form into patty shapes.
  • Heat 2 tbsp vegetable oil and 1 tbsp butter in a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add patties and fry for 3-5mins each side, or until golden and crispy. Enjoy!

  • Add grated potato to a mixing bowl and add cold water. Swish around with your hand to get out as much starch as possible, then drain water away.
  • Place a cloth over the bowl and place the shredded potato on top. Add grated shallot on top, then twist into a ball and squeeze out as much moisture as possible.
  • Place into a DRY bowl and combine with 1 tbsp flour and 1/4 tsp salt and pepper. The salt will draw out a small amount of moisture from the shredded potato, which glues with the flour to keep the potato intact. Divide mixture and mould into 6 equal oval shapes. I recommend working fairly quickly as the longer you leave the patties the more wet they get.
  • Add 2 tbsp vegetable oil and 1 tbsp butter to a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add patties and fry for 3-5mins each side OR until golden brown and crispy.
