Homemade Grocery Store Frosting Recipe image

Why are cakes from the grocery store so delicious? It's in the frosting. This easy, homemade grocery store frosting delivers the same sweet, smooth flavor of a store-bought cake.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/2 cup softened butter
1 cup vegetable shortening, crisco used here
2 pounds confectioners sugar
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
pinch salt
4-6 tablespoons water, or milk

Steps:

  • In the bowl of a standing mixer or in a large bowl with an electric hand mixer, blend the butter and shortening on low speed. Gradually add about half of the confectioner's sugar. Keep the mixer on low when adding additional ingredients, but you may increase the speed to medium when blending. Blend in the vanilla, salt and four tablespoons of the milk or water. Gradually add the rest of the confectioner's sugar and mix very well until the frosting is smooth. If necessary, add additional milk or water to desired consistency.

1 cup shortening
½ cup butter
1 ½ tablespoons vanilla extract
2 pounds confectioners' sugar
⅛ teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons water

Steps:

  • In a heavy duty mixer combine the shortening, butter or margarine, vanilla and water. Add the sugar and salt, beat until well mixed. Add a tablespoon or two more of water if needed. Turn mixer to the highest speed and beat for 15 minutes.

A light tasting whipped frosting suitable for filling a rolled cake or whoopee pies. Great on angel food cake. Never fails as long as you don't let it cool uncovered or a skin will form on the paste.

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
½ cup shortening
½ cup margarine
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, mix milk into flour gradually to prevent lumps. Cook, stirring constantly over low heat until thick. Cover with waxed paper and cool completely or set in bowl of ice water and stir until cooled.
  • In mixer bowl, combine shortening and margarine, beat 4 minutes. Add sugar; beat 4 minutes. Add cooled paste and vanilla and beat well.

2 cups shortening
1/2 cup powdered nondairy creamer
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 package (32 ounces) confectioners' sugar
1/2 to 3/4 cup water
Food coloring, optional

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, beat the shortening, creamer and extract until smooth. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar. Add enough water to reach desired consistency. If desired, add food coloring. , Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months. Bring to room temperature before spreading.
