NATURAL DRAIN UNCLOGGER

Natural Drain Unclogger image

Based on a recipe from my Shaw's grocery store's Wild Harvest November 2009 holiday pamphlet. It says, "Along with potato peels and onion skins often comes a clogged sink. Thankfully, there is a way to unclog sinks without sending toxic chemicals down the drain and out into the environment." Cook time is boiling water time. I can honestly say that I use this regularly in my kitchen sink and it works as well for me as Draino did.

Time 40m

Yield 1 unclogged drain

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 gallons water, divided
1/4 cup baking soda
1 cup vinegar
1 plunger (cup style of course!)

Steps:

  • Clean any debris from sink.
  • Boil a gallon of water. Slowly, pour this down the drain. For minor clogs, this may do the trick. If not, continue with next steps.
  • Pour baking soda down the drain. Immediately follow this with the vinegar. The interaction between the two should be enough to break up the clog.
  • Allow the sink to "rest" in this state for 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil.
  • Pour two quarts of the boiling water down the drain after the 15-20 minutes, to rinse away the vinegar, baking soda and clogging debris.
  • Place the cup plunger over the sink drain and plunge to thoroughly dislodge the clogging materials.
  • Finish by pouring two more quarts of boiling water down the drain.

  • Baking Soda and Vinegar. The chemical reaction between baking soda and white vinegar creates a fizzing, bubbling action that helps break down grease, soap scum, and other debris in the drain, says Alicia Sokolowski, the president and co-CEO of Aspen Clean.
  • Cream of Tartar, Baking Soda, and Salt. While cream of tartar is typically used for cooking, it is also a powerful, non-toxic cleaning agent.
  • Dish Soap and Hot Water. The easiest way to clean your drain is with two items you likely use every day: soap and water. "The hot water will help dissolve and wash away the soap residue and loosen any grease or debris in the drain," says Sokolowski.
  • Borax, Vinegar, and Salt. Borax is commonly used as a laundry booster to brighten whites, but it can be used for cleaning around your home, too.
