HOMEMADE BABY OATMEAL

Homemade Baby Oatmeal image

I was looking for oatmeal that was not iron fortified, and found a way to make it myself with some help from the internet. So easy! This powder can also be used in the homemade instant oatmeal recipes you can find here on zaar. I just keep it in a Tupperware container and its ready to go. The original recipe I found on wholesomebabyfood.com called for steel cut oats. But for the life of me, I could not get them ground fine enough, plus it took 10 minutes to cook. Although this is "more processed", it's so much faster!

Steps:

  • In food processor, process oats until they resemble fine powder. (You can use a blender, too, but make in smaller batches).
  • Add HOT tap water to desired consistency and stir.
  • Mix with fruit, yogurt, etc.
  • Always test temperature before feeding to baby!

  • Add oats, banana slices and cinnamon into a pot. Add water and stir to combine. Heat over medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes or until all the liquid has been absorbed. Be sure to stir the oats several times while cooking to make sure the banana slices melt into the oats. You’ll know the oatmeal is done when all the water has been absorbed and the oats are creamy and fluffy.
  • Portion oats into a bowl and let cool before serving. Oats can be warm, but you don't want them to be too hot. If the oats are too thick (sometimes this happens as the oats cool) add a splash of breast milk, formula or water to thin. Feel free to add toppings like fresh berries, more peanut butter or banana chunks.

  • Get both your peas and green beans going in separate pots on the stove. I use frozen (easy to have on hand), but you can substitute fresh. Steam each vegetable (or cook in a small amount of boiling water) until tender. About 4-5 minutes for frozen peas, 7-9 minutes for frozen green beans.
  • While the veggies are going on the stove, take turns with your microwave to make the frozen butternut squash and the oatmeal.
  • For the frozen butternut or winter squash, transfer the contents to a bowl, cover and microwave for about 5 minutes. Remove carefully (it will be hot) and let it cool before your refrigerate it.
  • For the oatmeal, I use regular old-fashioned or rolled oats and microwave them with some water for about 2 1/2 minutes. (See my post on 3-minute breakfast oatmeal for more detailed instructions and tips.) Puree with additional water (or use breastmilk or formula) and keep an eye on it. Oatmeal soaks up liquid as it sits so it’s likely to get hard again, either before it cools or after it’s been refrigerated. You may need to add additional water/breastmilk/formula to it before serving to ensure it’s spoonable.

  • Add Oats: add in 1 cup of old-fashioned oats along with the chia seeds, hemp seeds and any spices you are using.
  • Cook: turn down the heat to medium-low and cook the oats for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until all of the water is gone and the oats are soft. Let cool slightly.
  • Blend: transfer the oats to a blender or food processor and puree for 1-2 minutes, adding water in 1/4 cup increments if needed, until completely smooth. I had to add 1/2 cup of water to my oatmeal. You will want the oat cereal to be on the thinner side so it doesn't become sticky. The oats will continue to absorb liquid as they cool, so add more water, breast milk or formula as needed.

  • Add the oats to a blender. Secure the lid and grind, starting on low and working up to high, until the oats form a flour-like powder.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of the oat powder to a heat safe bowl. Stir in about 2 tablespoons very hot water (or warm breastmilk or formula), adding more as needed to thin to desired consistency. (Start thinner, so the mixture is easy for baby to move around in their mouths—it should not be sticky for new eaters. You can gradually use less liquid as baby becomes more comfortable with solids.)
  • Add any optional flavorings. Serve with a spoon or offer a preloaded spoon to baby to feed themselves, stopping the meal when they turn their head or close their mouth.
