As an appetizer or as a bread accompaniment, these savory pinwheels are light, flaky and whirling with cheese!

3 cups Original Bisquick™ mix
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2/3 cup water
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup pizza sauce

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 425°F. Grease cookie sheet. Mix Bisquick, Italian seasoning, garlic powder and water until dough forms. Turn dough onto surface dusted with Bisquick; gently roll in Bisquick to coat. Knead 10 times.
  • Roll dough into 18x10-inch rectange. Brush with melted butter. Sprinkle with cheeses. Tightly roll up dough; pinch edge to seal. Cut roll into eighteen 1-inch slices. Place on cookie sheet.
  • Bake 11 to 13 minutes or until golden. Heat pizza sauce until hot. Dip pinwheels into sauce.

This is a savoury version of elephant ears. I came up with it when I wanted to bake a simple yet tasty appetiser for my family. The herbs and cheese can be varied to your liking. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do! :) The dough was inspired by this recipe: Recipe #40835

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1 pinch chili powder
2 -3 tablespoons oil
1/3 cup milk
40 g cheese, grated

Steps:

  • In a bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt, herbs and chili powder.
  • In another bowl combine milk and 2 tbs of oil. Add to the dry ingredients and mix into a dough. If it is too dry add the 3rd tbs of oil.
  • Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead into a soft dough.
  • Either pat it down into a rectangle or roll it out. It should be about 1 cm/0.5 inches thick.
  • Spread with the cheese and roll up starting on the longer end.
  • Slice into 10 slices and place on a paper-lined baking sheet. Pat down gently.
  • Bake in the preheated oven at 200°C/400°F for about 15 minutes.

½ (17.5 ounce) package frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 (8 ounce) container cream cheese with herbs
6 ounces sliced Swiss cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Dust a flat work surface lightly with flour. Unroll puff pastry and roll out to a rectangle. Spread a thin layer of herbed cream cheese over the puff pastry. Cover with Swiss cheese slices, leaving a 1-inch border. Roll puff pastry up tightly like a jelly roll.
  • Slice puff pastry roll in 1/4-inch-thick slices and lay on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven on the center rack until lightly browned and puffed up, 15 to 20 minutes.

1 pkg ( 8 ounce) cream cheese, softened
2 Tbsp chopped parsley
2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp dried basil leaves, crushed
1/8 tsp pepper
1/8 tsp garlic powder
1 1 - pound unsliced whole wheat bread loaf, crusts trimmed
1/4 finely chopped pecans
1/4 c sesame seeds
1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
margarine or butter, softened

Steps:

  • 1. Combine cream cheese, parsley, juice and seasonings, mixing until well blended. Slice bread lengthwise into 1/2 inch slices. Roll each slice to 1/4 inch thickness. Evenly spread each bread slice with cream cheese mixture; roll up, starting at narrow end. Spread bread rolls with margarine, excluding ends.
  • 2. In small skillet, combine remaining ingredients; cook 3 minutes or until worcestershire sauce evaporates. Cool. Coat bread rolls with pecan mixture; chill at least 30 minutes. Cut each bread roll crosswise into 1/2 inch slices.
