Heinz 57® Copycat image

Someone left the bottle empty in the fridge (well, just a few drops is the same as empty). I had just enough to copy it, then when I brought a sample to my unsuspecting taste-tester, he liked mine better than the original! I washed my Heinz 57® bottle, multiplied this recipe to fill 'er up, and haven't bought another name brand since. Hope you like it!

1 tablespoon ketchup
1 ¼ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon yellow mustard
¼ teaspoon lemon juice
1 drop hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®)

Steps:

  • Whisk ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, lemon juice, and hot sauce together in a small bowl until smooth.

This is adapted from a recipe on the back of a bottle of Heinz 57 sauce. The original called for the sauce and honey only. I decided to jazz it up a bit by adding some more ingredients. Hence the name Heinz 59 Sauce. The result works as a different sauce/glaze for almost any kind of protein. I used it on smoked chicken thighs as a glaze at the end of grilling. It is very quick to make and stores well refrigerated in a squeeze bottle. Growing up in very small Nebraska farm town famous for great beef cattle; Heinz 57 was the sauce you always found in the small family owned restaurants in town. Heinz 57 sauce, Tabasco sauce and Heinz Ketchup were the go to sauces coupled with a grain fed Angus beefsteak from the local cattle ranchers. Looking back now makes me wonder why anyone would smother such great beef with sauce. Go figure!

10 oz Heinz 57 sauce (1 small bottle)
4 oz honey
2 tsp lemon thyme, very finely minced
1/4 tsp granulated garlic
1/2 tsp garlic pepper
2 tsp lemon juice

  • Combine all ingredients and whisk until completely combined. Store refrigerated in a squeeze bottle.

1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1 egg (slightly beaten)
1/2 cup bread crumbs (seasoned and dry, such as Italian seasoned or garlic and herb)
1/4 cup onion (finely chopped)
1/3 cup milk
1/2 cup Heinz 57 Sauce (divided, as more for topping)
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground)

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 350 F (180 C/Gas 4). Line a rimmed baking sheet or pan with foil.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, beaten egg, bread crumbs, onion, milk, 1/4 cup of Heinz 57, salt, and pepper.
  • Shape the meat mixture into a loaf and place it in the prepared pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour (see note). Carefully pour off excess grease and top with more Heinz 57 Sauce. Return the meatloaf to the oven to 10 to 15 minutes longer.
  • Allow meatloaf to stand 5 minutes before slicing.
