HEARTY HOEDOWN GRILLED BURGERS
Beef up everyone's summer grilling favorite with Worcestershire sauce, bell pepper, and other simple seasonings you probably have on hand, then top with a slice of good ole American cheese.

- Heat gas or charcoal grill. In medium bowl, mix ground beef, onion, bell pepper, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder and pepper until well blended. Shape mixture into 6 patties, 1/2 inch thick.
- Place patties on grill. Cover grill; cook over medium heat 13 to 15 minutes, turning once, until meat thermometer inserted in center of patties reads 160°F. To toast buns, place cut sides down on grill during last 1 to 2 minutes of cooking time. Top each patty with cheese slice; cook just until cheese is melted.
- Spread cut sides of toasted buns with sandwich spread; top with onion slices. Place cheese-topped patties in buns.

PERFECT GRILLED BURGERS

- Preheat a grill to medium high. Form ground beef (preferably chuck) into 6-ounce patties and make an indentation in each. Season the patties on both sides with salt and pepper. Lightly brush the grill grates with vegetable oil, then grill the patties, indentation-side up, until marked on the bottom, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook until marked and slightly firm, about 3 more minutes for medium doneness. For cheeseburgers, top with 2 slices cheese during the last minute of cooking; cover the grill to melt.

When I plan a casual country cookout, I invite these dressed-up burgers to the table. Bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese toppings and a touch of sauce really boost the flavor. And the mildly seasoned meat turns out nice and juicy.

- In a small skillet, saute the garlic in oil for 1 minute or until golden. Stir in 1/3 cup lime juice, 1 tablespoon cola, orange juice and soy sauce. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 5-6 minutes or until slightly thickened. Set aside for basting. , Crumble beef into a large bowl. Sprinkle with garlic powder and remaining lime juice and cola; mix well. Shape into four 3/4-in.-thick patties. , Grill, covered, over medium heat for 8-9 minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 160°, basting occasionally with sauce. During the last 2 minutes, top burgers with cheese and bacon. Serve on buns with lettuce, tomato and onion.

I like to toast rye rolls or whole wheat hamburger buns on the grill for a few minutes while the burgers finish cooking. Then I top the burgers with ketchup and pickle planks right before serving.
