HOW TO MAKE TRADITIONAL SWITCHEL (HAYMAKER'S PUNCH)
Try this old-fashioned four-ingredient hydrating drink recipe that used to be known as "Haymaker's Punch"

- Finely chop or grate your ginger and add it to your mason jar. I prefer to grate my ginger with a zester as it does a better job of releasing the juices. (I like this one because it also does a fantastic job with citrus zest and even after eight years of use it's still sharp, ask my fingers how I know!)
- Pour the lemon juice (and zest if used), apple cider vinegar, honey or maple syrup and water into your jar.
- Screw the lid down tightly and shake the dickens out of it. You want all of your honey dissolved and a little frothy tornado of ginger bits in there.
- Loosen your lid a little and let your jar sit out on the counter for 24-36 hours. This gives the naturally occurring yeast in the honey and ginger a chance to do a little fermenting and makes your switchel a bit fizzier.
- Strain your switchel through the strainer into a clean jar or Grolsch-style bottle.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR TONIC
This weight-loss tonic might help you slim down, even though it's not a quick fix for healthy habits. Apple cider vinegar's sour flavor (the acetic acid) may help you eat less and stay more satisfied. Green tea has caffeine and antioxidants that may help boost fat loss. - Place all ingredients together in a large bowl and mix very well. You can add ice and drink the switchel immediately at this point if you like.
- If you prefer a more carbonated beverage, then take this additional step: slowly pour mixture into large glass bottles with wire and ball stoppers (I like these) and fasten the lids. Alternatively, you can mix up the switchel with cold, sparkling mineral water (I prefer this brand) and get the bubbly right away without bottling.
- Leave the sealed bottles on the counter for at least 2-3 days (up to a week or two is fine also if your kitchen is very cool) to add carbonation and then refrigerate. Open in the sink slowly and only when the beverage is very cold to prevent explosions or the switchel foaming out of the bottle and making a mess.
