COPYCAT MCDONALD'S HASH BROWNS RECIPE

Copycat McDonald's Hash Browns Recipe image

McDonald's hash browns are iconic and super easy to make at home. Make a double or triple batch, and store the extra hash browns in a freezer-safe bag.

Provided by Lindsay D. Mattison

Categories     Breakfast

Time 1h25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

10.5 ounces russet potatoes
3 cups water
3 tablespoons kosher salt
1 tablespoon granulated white sugar
2 tablespoons potato flour
1 tablespoon corn flour
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Canola oil, for frying

Steps:

  • Peel the potatoes and discard the skins, placing the potatoes in a bowl of cold water to keep them from discoloring.
  • Meanwhile, bring 3 cups of water to a boil with the salt and sugar in a medium saucepan. When the water is boiling, grate the potatoes through the large hole of a box grater and add them to the boiling water. Cook for three minutes.
  • Remove the potatoes to a strainer and run them under cold water to stop the cooking process.
  • Transfer the potatoes to a cheesecloth-lined strainer and squeeze out most of the excess water. There should be some water remaining to help bind with the flour, but the potatoes should not be dripping wet.
  • Place the strained potatoes in a medium bowl and mix with the rice flour, corn flour, onion powder, and white pepper.
  • Form four patties about 1/4 cup each and shape them into large ovals.
  • Freeze the patties for one to three hours, until they're hardened all the way through.
  • In a large sauté pan, heat an inch of oil over medium-high heat until it's shimmering.
  • Carefully add the potato patties to the hot oil, splitting them into two batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  • Flip the hash brown halfway through, cooking for 4 to 5 minutes per side until they're golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  • Remove the hash brown to a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Serve hot.

VERY EASY HASH BROWN

Very Easy Hash Brown image

A very easy and tasty hash brown recipe. You can also add some bacon, onions, herbs, etc. to it. Experiment yourself!! You will need a large clean towel to remove the juice from the potatoes, and this step is very important, otherwise it won't come out crispy. Also, be generous on the amount of oil when you cook the hash brown, oil makes it crispier.

Provided by Icy2097

Categories     Breakfast

Time 15m

Yield 1 big hash brown, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 large potato
1 pinch salt
1 pinch pepper

Steps:

  • Peel the skin of potatoes if they are dirty, otherwise you can also leave them on.
  • Fine julienne cut the potatoes ( I used the julienne cut on my hand slicer).
  • Try to squeeze all the juice from the potatoes with a towel.
  • Flavor with salt and pepper according to taste.
  • Heat oil on a skillet pan (non-stick is a good choice). Be generous on the oil, it will make your hash brown very crispy.
  • On medium-high heat, pour the potatoes on the pan and try to make it flat and round. Do not stir it.
  • Turn it over when golden brown and it's done when both sides are golden and crispy.

PERFECT HASH BROWNS

Perfect Hash Browns image

Learn how to make hash browns with this easy, classic recipe. With shredded potatoes and a few other pantry staples, the best hash browns are less than an hour away!

Provided by BHG Test Kitchen

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1.25 pound russet potatoes
0.25 teaspoon salt
0.125 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 - 2 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
Paprika (optional)

Steps:

  • Peel potatoes. Coarsely shred potatoes using a handheld shredder or a food processor with a coarse shredding blade.
  • Place shredded potatoes in a large bowl; add enough cool water to cover potatoes. Stir well. Drain in a colander set in a sink. Repeat rinsing and draining two or three times until water runs clear. Drain again, pressing out as much water as you can with a rubber spatula. Line a salad spinner with paper towels; add potatoes and spin.* Repeat, if necessary, until potatoes are dry. Transfer potatoes to a large bowl. Sprinkle potatoes with salt and pepper, tossing to combine.
  • In a 10-inch nonstick skillet** heat 1 tablespoon of the oil and the butter over medium-high heat until butter foams. Add potatoes to the skillet, spreading into an even layer. Gently press with the back of a spatula to form a cake. Reduce heat to medium. Cook, without stirring, about 12 minutes or until the bottom is golden brown and crisp.
  • Invert a baking sheet or plate over the top of the skillet. Carefully invert the skillet with the baking sheet or plate to transfer the potatoes to the baking sheet or plate. If needed, add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the skillet. Using the baking sheet or plate, slide the potatoes back into the skillet, uncooked side down. Cook, without stirring, about 8 minutes more or until the bottom is golden brown. If desired, sprinkle with paprika before serving.

Time 35m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 medium russet potatoes, shredded
½ medium onion, finely chopped
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 cup oil for frying, or as needed
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Rinse shredded potatoes until water is clear, then drain and squeeze dry. Place shreds in a bowl, and mix in the onion, flour and egg until evenly distributed.

It should take at least 5 minutes per side. If you are cooking them in one big piece, it can be cut into quarters for easier flipping.

Provided by Barney Desmazery

Categories     Breakfast, Brunch, Side dish

Time 30m

Yield Makes 8 (serves 4)

Number Of Ingredients 3

3 medium-sized potatoes (approx. 370g in total, unpeeled, left whole - Maris Pipers, King Edward and Desirée are all good choices)
50g butter, melted
4 tbsp sunflower oil

Steps:

  • Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water for 10 mins then drain and set aside until cool enough to handle.
  • Coarsely grate the potatoes into a bowl discarding any skin that comes off in your hand as you grate. Season well with salt and pepper and pour over half the butter. Mix well then divide the mix into 8 and shape into patties or squares. The hash browns can be prepared a day ahead and chilled until ready to cook or frozen for up to a month.
  • To cook, heat the oil and the remaining butter in a frying pan until sizzling and gently fry the hash browns, in batches if needed, for 4-5 mins on each side until crisp and golden. Serve straight away or leave in a low oven to keep warm.

  • Scrub the potatoes clean and grate them on a large-holed cheese grater (I left the skin on, but you can peel it first if you’d like). In a fine-mesh sieve, rinse the grated potato well until the water runs clear.
  • Drain the potatoes, and then place them potato on a clean tea towel or several paper towels. Twist the towel to remove as much moisture from the potatoes as possible (you might need to do this in two batches).
  • In a large skillet (preferably cast iron, but non-stick works, too), warm the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering and a piece of grated potato sizzles on contact. Spread the potatoes over the skillet in an even layer and press them down with a spatula. Let them cook, undisturbed, for 2 minutes.
