1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Dash ground allspice
1 cup cold water
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon rum extract

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, flour, nutmeg, allspice and water until smooth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from the heat; stir in butter and extracts. Serve with spice cake. Refrigerate leftovers.

¼ cup dark rum
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Beat butter or margarine until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Sift confectioners' sugar into the butter. Add rum, vanilla, and nutmeg. Beat on high speed for 5 minutes. Serve at once over cake, or cover and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature before using if refrigerated.

2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups boiling water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup butter

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch and salt. Gradually stir in water until smooth. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 15 minutes until smooth, thickened and clear. Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla and butter. Serve warm over cake.

2 eggs

3 1/2 cups fuji apples, peeled, chopped
1 cup walnuts, chopped
1 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon orange-flavored liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or 1 tablespoon orange juice
1 tablespoon milk
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 325°F Grease and flour 10-cup Bundt or tube pan.
  • Whisk melted butter, sugar and brown sugar in large bowl; whisk in eggs. Whisk flour, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt in medium bowl; gently stir into butter mixture. Fold in apples, walnuts and cranberries. (Batter will be stiff.) Spoon into pan.

1 cup white sugar
1 egg
¾ cup milk
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8- or 9-inch square baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar until smooth; mix in egg. Stir in the milk. Sift in the flour and baking powder, and mix well. Fold in the blueberries. Spread evenly in the prepared pan.
