This is a big hit with everyone in my family! My brother beggs me to come over and make it for him often. It is very filling and the leftovers heat up well wrapped in tin foil and heated in the oven.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 loaf French bread
1 lb hamburger
1 can cheddar cheese soup
1 can tomatoes, chopped (I use Rotel)
1/2 cup celery, chopped (optional)
1 bell pepper, chopped
1/2-3/4 medium onion, chopped
1 -2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (or to taste)
6 -8 slices cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Cut loaf of bread in half, lenghtwise and hollow it out, (save the crumbs).
  • Brown hamburger and drain.
  • Mix all ingredients except cheese slices in a LARGE frying pan.
  • Simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Stir in bread crumbs and fill shell with mixture.
  • Cut cheese slices in half to make triangles and put on top.
  • Bake for 5-8 minutes at 350 degrees to melt cheese.

1 lb hamburger
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 (10 3/4 ounce) can tomato soup, undiluted
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 lb French bread
1 -2 tablespoon butter
8 ounces Velveeta cheese, sliced

Steps:

  • Cook hamburger and onion, drain grease.
  • Add soup and spices, simmer 5-10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, slice top third off bread, hollow out bottom half of loaf, leaving a 3/4-inch shell, save bread chunks, or feed to the birds!
  • Spread top slice of bread (cut side), with butter.
  • Place hollowed out bread on cookie sheet and broil till lightly browned.
  • Take out of oven and fill with meat mixture, top with cheese slices.
  • Place buttered top next to it, put back in oven at 350º; bake till heated through and top is toasted a little.
  • Put the top on, slice into wide slices for sandwiches, about 4-5 inches wide.
  • 4-6 servings.

Unique and tasty meal-buns may be frozen after cooking for great make-ahead lunch. Save prep time by purchasing pre-packaged shredded cabbage from your local produce market. Recipe is for four sandwiches-however, I make six smaller sandwiches and find them more enjoyable.

1 lb frozen white bread dough, thawed (equals 2 loaves)
1 lb ground beef
2 cups shredded cabbage
1 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped parsley (fresh)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 cup cheddar cheese
1/4 cup ketchup
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 tablespoon milk
kosher salt (optional)
cracked pepper (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In 10 inch skillet, brown beef over medium heat.
  • Drain fat and add cabbage, onions, parsley, garlic, salt and pepper.
  • Cook until cabbage is crisp/tender (5 minutes).
  • Add cheese and ketchup.
  • Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  • Divide each bread loaf into 4 equal pieces.
  • Roll dough out on lightly floured surface into a 6 inch circle.
  • Place 1/2 C of beef mixture into center of each circle.
  • Pinch the edges of the dough together to enclose beef and form into bun shape.
  • Seam side down, place filled bun on greased cookie sheet.
  • In small bowl, mix egg and milk.
  • Brush top of bun with egg mixture.
  • Sprinkle top with a bit of kosher salt and cracked pepper if desired.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until browned.
  • Serve with ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce and relish if desired.
  • TIP-buns can be frozen after cooking.
  • To prepare frozen buns, remove from freezer-wrap in foil and place on cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes or until heated through.

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) (once around the pan)
1 pound ground beef
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 medium yellow onions, finely chopped
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Dijon or spicy brown mustard, to dress the bread
4 slices deli Swiss cheese, folded to cover the bread, or 6 ounces Gouda or smoked Gouda, sliced to fit the bread
Chopped fresh chives or flat-leaf parsley, for garnish

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 200°F.
  • Crisp the bread in the low oven, split lengthwise, then cut in half again to make 4 bread boats and hollow out the bread. Switch the broiler on.
  • Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the EVOO. Add the meat, season liberally with salt and pepper, and brown and crumble it, 3 minutes. Add the onions and cook for 10 minutes more, stirring frequently. Add the Worcestershire and remove from the heat.
  • Spread a little Dijon or spicy brown mustard across the bottoms of the breads. Fill with the meat and onions and top the filled breads with the cheese. Melt the cheese under the broiler and garnish with the chives or parsley.
