OLD FASHIONED HAM BALLS

Old Fashioned Ham Balls image

Recipe lightly adapted from and with thanks to Foodie with Family

Provided by Mary Younkin

Number Of Ingredients 11

Meatball Ingredients:
2 pounds leftover ham
2 pounds ground pork
4 eggs
1 1/4 cups milk
1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs (gluten free panko will work fine as well)
Glaze Ingredients:
3 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons ground mustard powder

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease (2) 9x13 baking dishes with oil and set aside. Use the coarse setting on your meat grinder to grind the leftover ham. If you don't have a meat grinder, you can use a food processor to pulse until it is chopped like hamburger meat.
  • Combine all the meatball ingredients in a large bowl and mix with your hands until combined. Roll into 1 1/2" - 2" meatballs. I use a medium size cookie scoop to scoop them all the same size before smoothing them with my hands. Arrange the meatballs in the baking pans and set aside.
  • Whisk together all the glaze ingredients in a medium size saucepan over medium high heat. Bring to a boil, whisking until the sugar has dissolved. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 4-5 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.
  • Pour the glaze over the ham balls, dividing it between the two pans. Bake the ham balls, uncovered, for 75-85 minutes, until the ham balls have browned and the sauce has reduced to a syrupy consistency. Enjoy!
  • FREEZER MEAL: Let the meatballs cool and then transfer to a freezer safe Ziploc or an airtight container. Pour all remaining glaze over them and press out any air. Let thaw in the refrigerator before reheating covered in the oven, on the stove-top or in the microwave.

TASTE OF HOME OLD FASHIONED HAM BALLS

Taste of Home Old Fashioned Ham Balls image

Sticky, sweet-and-sour, savoury ham meatballs in a brown sugar and mustard glaze. Use up your leftover ham, or make like us and skip the ham dinner going straight to these.

Provided by Rebecca Lindamood

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 pounds ground pork
2 pounds leftover ham
4 large eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/3 cups crushed shredded wheat cereal (You can use a food processor or a zipper top bag and a mallet for the job!)
3 1/2 cups brown sugar (lightly packed)
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup apple cider vinegar (Don't use white vinegar here. It lacks oomph!)
2 teaspoons ground mustard powder (Or 1 tablespoon prepared British-style mustard, like Coleman's.)

Steps:

  • Use the coarse setting on your meat grinder to grind your ham. (If you do not have a meat grinder, use your food processor to pulse until it is finely chopped like hamburger or chop very finely with a large, sharp knife.)
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Evenly coat two 9"x13" baking dishes with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Combine all the ham ball ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix together with your hands until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • Roll the meat into 2-inch balls. (I use a medium sized disher to get evenly sized meatballs so they cook at the same rate.)
  • Arrange the ham balls in the pans. Set aside.
  • Add all the glaze ingredients to a medium-sized, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, whisking just until the sugar is fully melted.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 4 minutes. Do not cover the pan while simmering.
  • Pour the glaze over the ham balls, dividing evenly between the two pans.
  • Bake the ham balls, uncovered, for 70 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced to a syrupy consistency and the ham balls are browned.

AMISH HAM BALLS

Amish Ham Balls image

Ham ball recipes always remind us of church potlucks. There are so many delicious things to eat at those events, but someone will always bring a fantastic recipe like this one. As you're loading up your plate with potato salad, coleslaw, and funeral sandwiches, you're secretly just hoping that there will be some ham balls left by the time you get to them. These Amish ham balls are our version of that all time favorite recipe, and this one is made for a crowd. With plenty of dark brown sugar and ketchup, this recipe is bursting with flavor. It's guaranteed to be a favorite at any church potluck or family event. Luckily this recipe makes plenty of Amish ham balls to go around... you might even have some leftovers to enjoy the next day! This recipe uses purchased ham steak that you grind yourself into ground ham. It's easy to do in your food processor, and you'll love the savory, salty flavor that comes from the ham steak. You'll also make your own glaze, which is easier than it sounds. You'll combine a few delicious ingredients and then simmer on the stove until they reduce into gooey perfection. ###_main_description_image_### What do you serve with ham balls? As you can see by the quantity on this recipe, it makes enough all on its own to fill everyone up! However, we recommend side dishes like coleslaw or a big green salad to balance out the richness of the ham. You can also serve it with corn, cucumber salad, or a variety of other delicious sides. ###_main_description_image_### Amish Ham Balls Recipe

  • BBQ Sauce-Glazed Pineapple Ham Picks. I love food that looks interesting and tastes great, and intentionally or not, these BBQ-glazed pineapple ham picks look like tiny houses with skinny chimneys.
  • Ham and Cream Cheese Roll-ups. If possible, these three-ingredient appetizers are even simpler to make than the pineapple ham picks! Cover your ham with cream cheese; then, roll up the ham slice with a pickle spear in the middle.
  • Ham and Cheese Sliders. Ask any 8-year-old you know, and they’ll tell you that there’s nothing better on a long, cold day than a hot ham and cheese sandwich.
  • Pear Prosciutto Appetizer. If you think pairing prosciutto, bleu cheese, honey, fresh red chilis, basil, and black pepper with pears seems like an odd combination, you’re not alone.
  • Ham and Cheddar Cheese Ball. If you love cheese balls as much as I do, then you probably won’t even need a description of this one to know you’ll enjoy it.
  • Prosciutto-Wrapped Caprese Salad Bites Appetizer. It shouldn’t take you more than half an hour to whip up enough of these prosciutto-wrapped Caprese salad bites to feed your entire party.
  • Prosciutto Cracker Appetizer. If you love prosciutto but aren’t crazy about the idea of cherry tomatoes, basil, and balsamic drizzle, try these prosciutto cracker appetizers instead.
  • Crunchy Swiss and Ham Appetizers. These look like hush puppies, but they have a crunchier, flakier crust and taste nothing like them at all. Instead, these flaky, golden delights contain mashed potatoes, ham, Swiss cheese, onions, and more.
  • Ham and Cheese Pinwheels. I know! It’s another ham and cheese appetizer, but to be fair, everyone knows how well ham and cheese go together. Plus, you can make these as simple (ham, cheese, cream cheese, and tortillas) or as complex as you like – add spinach, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and all your other favorite veggies, herbs, and condiments!
  • Hoagie Dip. Contrary to what you may be thinking, this is not a dip for your hoagies. Instead, it’s a dip made from everything you’d use to make a hoagie — only in dip form!
