Categories     Dessert

Time 2h5m

Yield 16

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ white cake mix
1 1/4 cups bubble gum-flavored soda pop or water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
3 egg whites
Red or blue food color (to match color of soda pop), if desired
Tray or cardboard, covered with foil or wrapping paper and plastic food wrap
1 container (12 oz) Betty Crocker™ Whipped vanilla frosting
1 teaspoon red or blue liquid or paste food color
1 bar (1.5 oz) chocolate-covered crispy candy
1 tube (0.68 oz) Betty Crocker™ blue decorating gel
1 foil-covered chocolate coin
1 peanut-shaped candy
Gum balls

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease bottoms only of one 8-inch or 9-inch round pan and one 8-inch square pan.
  • In large bowl, beat cake mix, soda pop, oil, egg whites and a few drops food color with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, then on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Divide batter evenly between pans.
  • Bake 26 to 34 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean (times may vary between the two pans). Cool 10 minutes. Run knife around sides of pans to loosen cakes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Freeze cakes uncovered about 1 hour for easier frosting if desired.
  • Place round cake near one end of tray for globe of gum ball machine; frost top and side with half of the frosting. Place square cake next to round cake for machine base. Stir 1 teaspoon food color into remaining frosting; frost sides and top of base with frosting. Wrap candy bar with foil. Place foil-wrapped candy bar near bottom of base. Use decorating gel to draw trap door on candy bar. Arrange chocolate coin and peanut candy above candy bar. Arrange gum balls on globe. Store loosely covered.

  • Prepare and bake one recipe Yellow Cake as directed for 13x9-inch cake. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove cake from pan; cool completely on wire rack.
  • Prepare batter for the second recipe Yellow Cake as directed, dividing the batter between one 8x1 1/2-inch round cake pan and one 8x8x2-inch square baking pan. Bake and cool as directed for 8-inch round layers. Cut square cake layer into an 8x6-inch rectangle by trimming away 2 inches from one side. Trim one of the short ends into a curve so it will fit next to the round cake layer. Set aside.
  • Tint 1 cup of the Creamy White Frosting red; set aside. Place 13x9-inch cake, bottom side up, on a large cutting board or flat serving platter. Spread top and sides of cake with Chocolate Butter Frosting. Place round cake layer on one end of frosted 13x9-inch cake. Spread top and sides of round cake with the remaining white frosting. Fit the rectangular cake layer below the round cake, trimming as necessary to fit. Spread top and sides of rectangular cake with red frosting.
  • Arrange large round candies on the round cake, keeping them close together to resemble gum balls in the machine. Add chocolate square to machine base to resemble gum ball slot (if desired, carve "25¢" on chocolate square with a toothpick). Insert end of corn chip above chocolate square for gum ball dispenser. Place a round candy in the dispenser (if necessary, use a small dab of frosting to secure candy to corn chip). If desired, sprinkle edges of round cake and around round cake with blue sugar for definition.

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Mix cake as directed on the box. Line mini cupcake pan with mini cupcake liners. Fill mini cupcakes two-thirds full. Bake 12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool completely before decorating.
  • Pour candy melts into a microwave safe bowl. Heat until melted, (about 1 minute) stir until smooth. Dip top of cupcake into melted candy. Place M&M’s to look like gumballs. Set decorated cupcakes on a cookie sheet and refrigerate until firm (about 15 minutes) TIP: Only dip a couple of cupcakes at a time. You don’t want the candy to solidify before you finish decorating.
  • Pour dark chocolate candy into a small microwave safe bowl. Heat until melted, (about 1 minute) stir until smooth. Dip full size M&M into the melted candy and place on the mini cone to look like an opening for the gumballs. Place on the same cookie tray with the cupcake to harden. If you are choosing method number one, fill each cone with mini M&M’s and carefully place a decorated cupcake on top. OR...take off the liner, dip the side of the cupcake in melted candy and then place on the mini ice cream cone.
