TRADITIONAL GREEK SALAD RECIPE

Simple traditional Greek Salad with ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, olives and creamy feta cheese.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 medium red onion
4 Medium juicy tomatoes
1 English cucumber (hot house cucumber) (partially peeled making a striped pattern)
1 green bell pepper (cored)
Greek pitted Kalamata olives (a handful to your liking)
kosher salt (a pinch)
4 tbsp quality extra virgin olive oil
1-2 tbsp red wine vinegar
Blocks of Greek feta cheese (do not crumble the feta, leave it in large pieces)
1/2 tbsp dried oregano

Steps:

  • Cut the red onion in half and thinly slice into half moons. (If you want to take the edge off, place the sliced onions in a solution of iced water and vinegar for a bit before adding to the salad. I do this in the video).
  • Cut the tomatoes into wedges or large chunks (I sliced some into rounds and cut the rest in wedges).
  • Cut the partially peeled cucumber in half length-wise, then slice into thick halves (at least 1/2" in thickness)
  • Thinly slice the bell pepper into rings.
  • Place everything in a large salad dish. Add a good handful of pitted kalamata olives.
  • Season very lightly with kosher salt (just a pinch) and a bit of dried oregano.
  • Pour the olive oil and red wine vinegar all over the salad. Give everything a very gentle toss to mix (do NOT over mix, this salad is not meant to be handled too much).
  • Now add the the feta blocks on top and add a sprinkle more of dried oregano.
  • Serve with crusty bread.

1 head romaine lettuce- rinsed, dried and chopped
1 red onion, thinly sliced
1 (6 ounce) can pitted black olives
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
2 large tomatoes, chopped
1 cucumber, sliced
1 cup crumbled feta cheese
6 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 lemon, juiced
ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • In a large salad bowl, combine the Romaine, onion, olives, bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumber and cheese.
  • Whisk together the olive oil, oregano, lemon juice and black pepper. Pour dressing over salad, toss and serve.

I got this recipe years ago from an online friend, and adjusted it to suit my family's tastes. It's such a great salad. I take it to potlucks all the time, and it's always the first thing gone! Great alone, or use it to stuff a tomato. Also, you can add grape or cherry tomatoes.

1/4 cup vegetable oil (or use half olive oil)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
8 ounces orzo pasta
1/2 cup red bell pepper, thinly sliced (or green)
3 green onions, sliced
1/2 lb feta cheese, cubed
1/2 cup black olives, sliced
cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes

Steps:

  • Combine oil, lemon juice, vinegar, oregano, salt and pepper in bowl and whisk until well blended. Refrigerate until ready to use -- the longer the better.
  • Cook orzo according to package directions.
  • Drain and rinse with cold water.
  • Pour dressing over pasta and stir gently to coat.
  • Add remaining ingredients.
  • Refrigerate, covered, until serving time.

I do not mess around when it comes to greek salads - and let me give you a little backstory on why! Greek food is surprisingly really big in Detroit (hello, Greektown!) - and it's very easy to find an amazing, authentic & flavorful greek salad no matter which town you are in. I had two favorite places in Michigan with the best greek salads in town - Greek Isles in Birmingham and Paul's in Rochester. What makes them so great? THE DRESSING. The dressing can truly make or break the salad. Both have delicious, creamy pink dressings that I couldn't figure out what was in for the life of me.When I moved to Texas, I was immediately on the hunt for the perfect Greek salad - but sadly, still no luck! So, I took matters into my own hands and tried to crack the pink dressing code for myself. And if I do say so myself, I've gotten pretty dang close! I can't wait for y'all to try this salad & dressing recipe and you'll understand the hype. Pro tip: serve with warm pita bread and dip in the dressing - it's amazing!

peperoncino peppers
chopped white onion
feta cheese
grilled chicken
beets
3/4 cup olive oil mayonnaise
1/2 cup beet juice
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
4 TB sugar
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp oregano
1 TB fresh or dried dill
1/2 cup feta cheese
3/4 cup milk or milk substitute
salt & pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Construct salad with desired toppings & toss if desired.
  • In a blender or food processor, add all salad dressing ingredients and blend on high until throughly combined and smooth. Chill until ready to serve. Extras can be left in fridge for up to a week.
  • Drizzle salad dressing overtop. It's really yummy to dip the pita bread in the dressing, too!
