Categories     Dinner     Lunch     Sandwich

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
1 large white onion (roughly chopped)
salt & black pepper (to taste)
1 cup ketchup
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 packed tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp yellow mustard
6 hamburger sized buns

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef- about 5 minutes & breaking it up as it cooks.
  • Stir in the onions, and season the mixture with salt & pepper- to taste.
  • Continue cooking the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the onions have softened and begun to caramelize- about another 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet, stirring them in until evenly combined.
  • Bring the sauce to a simmer, the reduce the heat to maintain a slow simmer. Cook the mixture like that for 10 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • When the sloppy joe mix has thickened, remove the skillet from heat

My grandma served these sandwiches each time I visited as a child. When I had children of my own, I relied on this recipe as an inexpensive way to feed them. They like it, and now my grandchildren do, too. - Patricia Pidgeon, Sycamore, Illinois

GRANDMA'S BEST-EVER SLOPPY JOES

Grandma's Best-Ever Sloppy Joes image

This recipe came from my grandma--one of the few we found written down! I grew up eating these sloppy joes as a kid and now my own kids love them too. Add the oatmeal in small portions and slowly--it doesn't take a whole lot. If you choose, you can also used minced onion to taste--works well if you need to cook more quickly!
