Steps:
- Melt shortening in a 3 or 4 quart saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat; let cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well.
- Sift together flour, baking soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Add to first mixture. Mix well. Chill at least 2 hours, or overnight.
- Form in 1 inch balls, roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheets two inches apart. Bake in moderately hot oven, 375°F, 8 - 10 minutes. Remove the cookies from the oven while they still look soft, because they flatten out as they cool.

GRANDMA HETLAND'S MOLASSES COOKIES
These were some of my favorite cookies when I was a little girl. This recipe actually comes from my Grandma Hetland's mom. She came from the Egeland family. Very Norwegian.

Steps:
- 1. Blend molasses, sugar and shortening. Add egg and spices. mix until combined then add flour.
- 2. My grandmother did not give a measurement for flour. So I estimated. Her exact words, "put in enough flour to handle and make into balls. Keep the dough soft."
- 3. Make into balls, press with a glass and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350* for 10 minutes.
