Number Of Ingredients 7

1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 teaspoon sugar
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
3 to 3 1/2 pounds (about 8 or 9 bunches) baby turnips, peeled and trimmed
3 eight-ounce bags cipollini onions, peeled and trimmed
1/2 cup water
Fresh herbs, for garnish

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Add sugar; season with salt and pepper. Cook until butter starts to color, about 1 minute. Add turnips and onions, swirling pan to evenly coat. Add the water; cover, and cook until almost all water has evaporated and vegetables are glazed, about 20 minutes.
  • Remove cover; continue cooking until liquid has evaporated and vegetables are caramelized, 3 to 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a large serving platter, and garnish with fresh herbs.

HONEY ROASTED CIPOLLINI ONIONS

Honey Roasted Cipollini Onions image

Provided by Tyler Florence

Categories     side-dish

Time 35m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

15 cipollini onions
Extra-virgin olive oil
About 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
1/3 cup honey
1/2 bunch thyme, leaves removed
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Add the onions to a large bowl, cover with hot water and allow to sit for about 5 minutes. This is to help make peeling the onions much easier. Strain onions and peel.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the 1/4 cup oil, vinegar, honey, thyme, salt and pepper until combined. Put the onions in a large bowl, pour the dressing over them and toss well to coat.
  • In a large saute pan over medium-high heat, add about 2 tablespoons olive oil and heat. Once hot, add the onions. Next place the saute pan into the preheated oven and roast for 18 to 20 minutes until the onions are soft and slightly caramelized.

SWEET-AND-SOUR SKILLET GLAZED TURNIPS

Sweet-and-Sour Skillet Glazed Turnips image

These slightly sweet turnips with a splash of vinegar are as easy as simmer, stir, season.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     side-dish

Time 35m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 1/2 pounds turnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 teaspoon sugar
1 to 2 teaspoons white balsamic or white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Spread the turnips in a single layer in a large skillet with a lid. Add enough water to cover the turnips halfway and then add the butter and sugar. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to maintain a simmer. Partially cover with the lid and simmer until the turnips are tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Uncover, increase the heat to high and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid almost completely evaporates and the turnips are glazed. Remove from the heat and stir in the vinegar and chives; season with salt and pepper.
