3 ounces vodka, any flavor
1/2 to 1 ounce ginger syrup, recipe follows
1/2 teaspoon freshly squeezed lime juice
Twist of lemon or lime
1 lemon
2 cups coarsely chopped fresh ginger with peel, about 8 ounces
1 cup sugar
2 cups water

Steps:

  • Fill a cocktail shaker or small pitcher with ice. Add the vodka, ginger syrup, and lime juice. Cover and shake vigorously, or stir, until combined and chilled, about 30 seconds. (In general, by the time the shaker mists up the drink is ready.) Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add twist and serve.
  • Remove the outer peel of the lemon with a vegetable peeler, taking care not to include too much of the bitter white pith. Finely chop the lemon peel and ginger in a food processor.
  • Transfer the lemon-ginger mixture to a medium saucepan, add the sugar and water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer, partially covered, for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture and cool. Cover and refrigerate for up to 1 week.
  • Yield: 2 cups

1 4-inch-long piece fresh ginger, thinly sliced lengthwise, or 1/2 tsp. dried lavender
1 750 milliliter bottle vodka (about 3 cups)

Steps:

  • Place ginger slices in a clean 1-quart jar. Using a wooden spoon, lightly crush ginger slices against the side of the jar. Add vodka.
  • Cover jar tightly with a nonmetallic lid (or cover jar with plastic wrap and tightly seal with a metal lid). Let stand in the freezer for 4 days.
  • Pour vodka through a fine mesh sieve to remove all solids. Return infused vodka to jar. Or to give as a gift, pour infused vodka into a decorative jar. Label and seal. Place jar in the freezer up to 3 months to store. Makes about 3 cups (24 1-ounce servings)

3 1/2 ounce ginger root (diced)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 vanilla bean (sliced down the middle)
16 ounces vodka
1/2 orange peel

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients in a lidded jar and shake to combine. Let steep for 2 days, shaking it once or twice each day. Remove the vanilla bean, recap and continue to steep for 3-4 more days, shaking the jar whenever you think of it
  • Strain out the solids through a strainer lined with a coffee filter. Rebottle it and let it sit for a day or two to mellow even more

1 (750 ml) bottle vodka
1/2 cup fresh ginger, diced

Steps:

  • Combine the vodka and ginger root in a clean container. (Reserve the vodka bottle for storing the infused vodka later.)
  • Seal the container and store in a cool, dark place for 3 days, shaking occasionally. After 3 days, pour the vodka through a strainer and discard the ginger solids. Return the strained, infused vodka to its original bottle.
  • Store infused vodka in the refrigerator or freezer for up to 1 month.
