GLüHWEIN RECIPE

Glühwein Recipe image

Make this traditional easy glühwein recipe at home. Wholesome hot mulled wine to celebrate the holidays.

Provided by Helene Dsouza

Categories     Drinks

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 Orange (untreated organic,*see notes)
10 Cloves
1 Vanilla Bean (or extract,*see notes)
3¾ cups Red Wine (*see notes)
1 cup Water
1 Cinnamon stick
1 Star Anise
pinch Nutmeg
Sugar (to your liking)

Steps:

  • Wash your orange well to get rid of impurities, pat dry and cut into thick slices.
  • Poke cloves into orange slices. This is to prevent the spices to fall into the mulled wine, and it will be easier to collect them afterward. Besides, it looks great too.
  • Slice the vanilla bean lengthwise and scratch out and collect the vanilla bean seeds.
  • Pour wine into a saucepan with the water and heat up gradually.
  • Place orange slices with cloves into the pan. Also add the vanilla bean with scratched out seeds, cinnamon stick, anise and nutmeg
  • Keep on slow heat (it should never boil!) and cover the pot for 15-20 minutes. You can keep the mulled wine to infuse away from the heat if you like.
  • Take out all the spices and orange slices. You can strain the mulled wine too if you don't want the fruit pulp in it.
  • Make sure your mulled wine is kept on a steady heat. Sweeten your gluhwein to your liking and serve hot.

GLUEHWEIN

Gluehwein image

Gluehwein is a German/Austrian winter-holiday drink that most tourists know as an after-ski drink. After you come in out of the snow, it is supposed to make you glow with warmth again. Watch it: Since you drink this wine warm, the alcohol goes to your head extra quick! Drink when you really have come in, and do not have to go out again! This is the one my father used to make for New Year's Eve.

Number Of Ingredients 6

¾ cup water
¾ cup white sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange
10 whole cloves
1 (750 milliliter) bottle red wine

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer.
  • Cut the orange in half, and squeeze the juice into the simmering water. Push the cloves into the outside of the orange peel, and place peel in the simmering water. Continue simmering for 30 minutes, until thick and syrupy.
  • Pour in the wine, and heat until steaming but not simmering. Remove the clove-studded orange halves. Serve hot in mugs or glasses that have been preheated in warm water (cold glasses will break.)

Glühwein (German Mulled Wine) image

You can't go wrong on a chilly night with a warm, mulled wine!

Provided by Sarah | Curious Cuisiniere

Categories     Drinks

Time 1h35m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 bottle red wine ((Pinot Noir, Merlot, un-oaked Cab Sauvignon))
1 lemon, (juiced (roughly 3-4 Tbsp of juice))
5 Tb sugar ((more to taste))
3 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange, (peeled and cut into bite-size pieces)
1 orange, (sliced for garnish, (optional))

Steps:

  • Put all the ingredients (except the orange garnishes) into a pot or large saucepan. Bring the mixture to a light simmer. Cover and reduce the heat to keep it just barely at a simmer. Simmer for 1 hour.
  • After simmering, turn off the heat and let the wine continue to steep for 30 minutes. (At this point you can take a small spoonful and taste your Glühwein. If it needs more sugar for your tastes, go ahead a mix some in!)
  • Remove the cloves and cinnamon stick.
  • Serve the mulled wine warm with an orange slice garnish, if desired.

MULLED WHITE WINE

Mulled White Wine image

A twist on traditional German Glühwein, Mulled White Wine is light and refreshing - but still packed with holiday spices and warmth. Made from white wine instead of red, this mulled wine recipe has hints of citrus as well as cinnamon, and makes for the perfect holiday drink!

Provided by Recipes From Europe

Categories     Drinks

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 bottle dry white wine (750 ml)
2 cinnamon sticks
1 organic orange
1 organic lemon
2 tablespoons orange juice
5 cloves
3 tablespoons sugar (more to taste)
2 tablespoons rum (optional)
star anise (optional)

Steps:

  • Wash and cut the orange and lemon. You can set aside a few slices for decoration.
  • Add the wine, fruit slices, cinnamon, orange juice, cloves, sugar, rum (optional), and star anise (optional) to a medium-sized pot.
  • Heat the wine on low heat for around 45 minutes. It's important that the wine doesn't come to a boil or else this will evaporate the alcohol. Give the mixture a stir occasionally.
  • Before serving, taste the mulled wine and add more sugar to taste. Pour the mulled wine through a sifter before serving. You can garnish the wine glasses with those extra citrus slices and a cinnamon stick (optional) before serving.
