GLUEHWEIN

Gluehwein image

Gluehwein is a German/Austrian winter-holiday drink that most tourists know as an after-ski drink. After you come in out of the snow, it is supposed to make you glow with warmth again. Watch it: Since you drink this wine warm, the alcohol goes to your head extra quick! Drink when you really have come in, and do not have to go out again! This is the one my father used to make for New Year's Eve.

GLüHWEIN RECIPE

Glühwein Recipe image

Make this traditional easy glühwein recipe at home. Wholesome hot mulled wine to celebrate the holidays.

Provided by Helene Dsouza

Categories     Drinks

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 Orange (untreated organic,*see notes)
10 Cloves
1 Vanilla Bean (or extract,*see notes)
3¾ cups Red Wine (*see notes)
1 cup Water
1 Cinnamon stick
1 Star Anise
pinch Nutmeg
Sugar (to your liking)

Steps:

  • Wash your orange well to get rid of impurities, pat dry and cut into thick slices.
  • Poke cloves into orange slices. This is to prevent the spices to fall into the mulled wine, and it will be easier to collect them afterward. Besides, it looks great too.
  • Slice the vanilla bean lengthwise and scratch out and collect the vanilla bean seeds.
  • Pour wine into a saucepan with the water and heat up gradually.
  • Place orange slices with cloves into the pan. Also add the vanilla bean with scratched out seeds, cinnamon stick, anise and nutmeg
  • Keep on slow heat (it should never boil!) and cover the pot for 15-20 minutes. You can keep the mulled wine to infuse away from the heat if you like.
  • Take out all the spices and orange slices. You can strain the mulled wine too if you don't want the fruit pulp in it.
  • Make sure your mulled wine is kept on a steady heat. Sweeten your gluhwein to your liking and serve hot.

GLUEHWEIN (NON-ALCOHOLIC) - GERMAN APPLE & TEA PUNCH

Gluehwein (Non-Alcoholic) - German Apple & Tea Punch image

Posted for ZWT6 German Region. I found this on a German Food & Recipe site that explained traditions of Germany. This drink is normally made with wine for adults but when I saw this post for a non-alcoholic drink for kids or adults who do not want alcohol I just had to post it.

Provided by HokiesMom

Categories     Beverages

Time 20m

GLüHWEIN (HOT SPICED RED WINE)

Glühwein (Hot Spiced Red Wine) image

A winter cocktail sure to warm you from your head to your toes. Red wine is warmed with spices and citrus, then amped up with a bit of brandy for the coziest holiday drink.

Provided by Kare for Kitchen Treaty

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 each medium organic orange
20 each whole cloves (give or take a few cloves - no need to be exact)
750 ml light red wine (1 bottle, on the drier/lighter side is better. We love Pinot Noir, Lemburger or Merlot can also work)
3 each (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
5 each strips lemon peel (about 2 inches long each, just use a carrot peeler and try to avoid including too much pith)
1/4 cup sugar (start with 1/4 cup and add to taste up to 2/3 cup)
1/3 cup brandy
Cinnamon sticks
Orange slices

Steps:

  • Using a toothpick, poke 20 holes all over your orange, then poke the cloves into the holes.
  • Add orange to a medium saucepan. Pour the wine into the pan. Add the cinnamon sticks, lemon peel, and 1/3 cup sugar. Stir gently to help dissolve the sugar.
  • Turn the heat on medium-low and heat until just below a simmer. Do not boil! Reduce heat to low - just enough to keep warm but again, not simmering or boiling. Cover and let warm over the heat for about 20 minutes, until hot wine is flavored by the spices.
  • Stir in the brandy. Taste and add more sugar if desired. Depending on your wine and tastes, you may only need the intial 1/4 cup of sugar, or you may need the entire 2/3 cup.
  • Ladle into three large or four smaller mugs, garnish if desired, pass 'em out and and inhale your Glühwein goodness.

GERMAN HOLIDAY DRINK, "GLUHWEIN"

German Holiday Drink,

This is a recipe I got from my German friend, Julie. It's very nice to sip on a cold evening...this will warm you right up! Pronounced "gloo-vine", though my boyfriend and I started jokingly calling it "Glooberwine" last year and it stuck :)

Provided by Selena Parisher @sjparisher

Categories     Hot Drinks

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 1/2 liter(s) bottle of red wine (i use merlot)
4 to 5 - cinnamon sticks
10 - whole cloves
1 - tangerine or mandarin orange (zest and juice)
1 - lemon (zest)
1 cup(s) sugar

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients in a large pot and heat slowly over low heat until steaming hot. *BUT DON'T LET IT COME TO A BOIL, OR THE ALCOHOL WILL COOK OUT, AND THAT'S NO FUN!*
  • Continue to heat slowly so the flavors can mingle and infuse the wine.
  • When ready to drink, strain the heated wine into a large pitcher, pour into coffee mugs.
  • If you don't have a zester, you can put slices of the lemon and orange in the mix instead.
