Any student, staff or alumnus from the University of Florida will be familiar with the famous sports drink invented at the school and named after the football team's mascot: the Gator. Make this to celebrate your college days (where you might have improvised a similar drink at the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party") -- it's surprisingly tasty and an orange-slice garnish tips it over the top.

1/4 cup blue sanding sugar
1/4 cup kosher salt
One 20-ounce bottle blue sports drink, such as Cool Blue Gatorade ®, chilled
1 cup thawed frozen limeade concentrate
1 cup silver tequila
1/3 cup blue curacao
Fresh orange slices, for serving

Steps:

  • Mix the sugar and salt in a shallow dish. Wet the rims of 4 to 6 rocks glasses with water and then dip in the sugar-salt mixture to coat.
  • Combine the sports drink, limeade concentrate, tequila and blue curacao in a large pitcher and stir. Fill the rocks glasses with ice, pour the margarita over and garnish each with an orange slice.

The Limoncello takes this margarita to a whole new level. Delightfully refreshing and definitely lemony. Be careful though, there is a lot of alcohol in this little power-packed drink.

15-20 Organic Lemons
750 Liter of Good Vodka, at least 80 proof
3 cups water
3 cups sugar
1 cup coarse Sugar
Zest of 2 Lemons or Zest of 3 Limes
4 oz Limoncello (homemade or store bought)
4 oz Silver Tequila
4 oz Triple Sec
4 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice (about 2 lemons)
1/2 cup Frozen Limeade Concentrate
Citrus Salt or Sugar for the Rim
Sliced Lemons and mint for Garnish (optional)

Steps:

  • Using a vegetable peeler, peel 15-20 lemons making sure to remove all the pith with a sharp knife.
  • Add lemon peels and 750 ml vodka to an airtight glass jar. Cover and let sit in a cool, dark place for 4 weeks.
  • Once the vodka has set and been infused, bring 3 cups of water and 3 cups of sugar to boil in a large saucepan. Reduce heat and cook for 6-8 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  • Let the simple syrup cool completely. Let it sit overnight at room temperature.
  • Strain the lemon peels through a mesh sieve. Discard the peels and keep only the lemon infused vodka.
  • Combine the vodka and the simple syrup mixture in an airtight glass container. Stir well and store in the freezer.
  • Combine one cup of coarse sugar with the zest of either 2 lemons or 3 limes.
  • In a medium-size pitcher, combine 4 ounces each of limoncello, silver tequila, triple sec, and fresh squeezed lemon juice, and 1/2 cup frozen limeade. Stir and chill until ready to serve.
  • Set out 2 saucers: pour 1/4-inch deep water into one and pour citrus sugar or salt into the other saucer (enough to rim the glasses). Additional citrus sugar/salt can be stored in an airtight container for one week.
  • Dip the rim of 4 margarita glasses in the saucer of water and shake the excess off. Dip the rims into the citrus sugar or salt.
  • Add crushed ice to each glasses. Pour in the Margarita mixture.
  • Optional: Place small sprigs of mint leaves in the middle of four sliced lemons. Lay the lemons on top of each margarita glass for a garnishment.

14 organic lemons
1 liter vodka
3 cups sugar

Steps:

  • Grate the zest from the lemons using a Microplane grater, taking care to leave the pith behind. Place the zest in a 3-quart pitcher. Pour the vodka over it and stir. Cover with plastic wrap and set in a spot where it won't be disturbed, at room temperature, and let steep 1 week.
  • Combine 3 1/2 cups water and the sugar in a large saucepan and cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes.
  • Let cool completely, then pour the syrup into the pitcher with the zest and stir. Cover tightly again and let stand for 24 hours. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve and discard the solids. Pour into clean bottles with tight-fitting caps. Refrigerate until well chilled, at least 4 hours or up to 1 month.
