Time 1h45m

Yield 20

Number Of Ingredients 6

½ cup butter
½ cup white sugar
½ cup corn oil
½ cup light corn syrup (such as Karo®)
2 (12 ounce) packages crispy corn and rice cereal (such as Crispix®)
1 (1.9 ounce) container aji nori furikake (seasoned seaweed and sesame rice topping)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 225 degrees F (110 degrees C).
  • Melt the butter and sugar together in a small sauce pan over low heat. Remove from heat, then stir in the corn oil and corn syrup. Place the cereal on a large baking sheet. Pour the butter mixture over the cereal, then sprinkle the furikake while tossing the cereal to coat.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the cereal is dry, stirring every 15 minutes to keep cereal from browning too quickly. Allow to cool, then store in an airtight container.

Furikake Chex Mix image

Furikake Chex Mix is a fun and easy Hawaii snack that we love to make and share with family and friends.

Provided by Kathy YL Chan

Categories     Hawaii Recipes

Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 box Wheat Chex
1 box Corn Chex
1 box Honeycomb cereal
1 bag (any size) Fritos
1 bag (any size) Bugles
1 bag (any size and shape) pretzels
1 cup butter
1/2 cup Karo Syrup (or honey)
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 bottle Nori Goma Furikake

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 250F.
  • In two large pans, divide the Wheat (or Rice) Chex, Corn Chex, Honeycomb cereal, Bugles, Fritos, and Pretzels, evenly between the two pans. Set aside.
  • Now make the syrup. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add in the Karo Syrup (or honey), sugar, vegetable oil, and soy sauce. Stir to mix.
  • Pour the syrup over the two pans of chex mix, make sure to divide the syrup equally between the two pans. Using two big spoons/spatulas, toss the chex mix until all the pieces are evenly coated with the syrup.
  • Then pour in the whole bottle of Nori Goma Furikake, split between the two pans. Stir until the furikake is mixed evenly.
  • Bake at 250F for 1 hour. Take the pan out every 15 minutes to toss/mix to make sure it cooks evenly.
  • Remove from oven, let cool. Then divide up into bags/containers and share. Everyone loves Furikake Chex Mix!

FURIKAKE CHEX MIX

Furikake Chex Mix image

I use 3 cups Rice Chex and 3 cups Corn Chex, but will submit as posted on Foodjimoto.com. It is ADDICTIVE! Please make sure you do not take it out of the oven too soon, it will be sticky and not crunchy. 1/5/12 here is a description of Furikake as suggested by Foodtvfan:" Furikake seasoning is like the salt and pepper of Japan. It is a table condiment made of roasted tan and black sesame seed, green nori flakes and pickle red shiso(beefsteak) leaves". Thanks Foodtvfan. In addition to this flavor, Furikake comes in multiple different flavors.

2 cups Rice Chex
2 cups Corn Chex
2 cups Wheat Chex
1 (8 ounce) bag bag Bugles original flavor snacks
1 (8 ounce) bag pretzel goldfish crackers
1 (8 ounce) bag trader joe's macarona almonds

3/4 cup sugar
3/4 canola oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce

2 teaspoons hot sauce
1 2/3 ounces Nori Komi Furikake

Steps:

  • Cook butter, karo syrup, sugar and oil over medium heat.
  • Stir until sugar has dissolved.
  • Add soy sauce and worcestershire sauce, stir until combined.
  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Place all remaining ingredients in large roasting pan.
  • Pour sauce over cereal mixture and mix well.
  • Place into oven and stir every 10-15 minutes.
  • After first stirring, mix in the bottle of Furikake.
  • Mix well to evenly distribute the Furikake and sauce.
  • Stir every 15 minutes.
  • Bake for 1-2 hours, depending on humidity.
  • You can tell when the mix is done-when it is dry and the sauce has been evaporated and it is no longer sticky.

STEVE'S OFTEN COPIED, NEVER DUPLICATED, FURIKAKE CHEX MIX

Steve's Often Copied, Never Duplicated, Furikake Chex Mix image

This is a sweet and spicy Asian variation of Chex mix. There are times I have made this by the bucketful, and it still runs out at parties. I often give this out as Christmas or hostess gifts. Be very careful. This party mix is HIGHLY addictive, very dangerous to keep around in big quantities and may result in some weight gain! This recipe is a combination of a few recipes, one from foodgeeks.com and another from beanpaste.blogspot.com. It also has a few of my own personal touches.

Time 2h5m

Yield 12 1 cup, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 cups Rice Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups Wheat Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups Corn Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups honeycomb cereal (optional)
2 cups pretzel sticks (I use Rold Gold brand)
2 cups dry roasted peanuts
1 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
3 tablespoons soy sauce (I use Kikkoman. Hawaii people, DO NOT USE Aloha Brand for this!!!)
1/2 cup oil
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1 (2 ounce) bottle Nori Goma Furikake (I prefer Nori Komi Furikake, but it wouldn't let me input Nori Komi Furikake, Mishima brand)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  • Mix together all the cereals, pretzels, and peanuts in a large baking pan (The tin foil ones that you can buy from the store to roast turkey works really well!).
  • Divide the mixture between two pans.
  • In a medium-sized sauce pan over medium to medium-high heat, melt butter.
  • Add sugar and dissolve well.
  • Add corn syrup, soy sauce, oil, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco Sauce. Stir until blended well. It works best if you heat till it reaches the hard ball stage (about 250 degrees).
  • Pour over cereal mixture, one pan at a time, and mix well.
  • Put into the oven.
  • After 15 minutes, remove from oven, and add one bottle of furikake to each pan. Mix around to evenly distribute furikake and sauce from the bottom.
  • Continue baking for about 1-2 hours, stirring every 15 minutes.
  • The cooking time fluauates depending on how crispy you want it, and how humid it is (making this in 90% humidity is a nightmare!).
  • Store in an air-tight container or ziplock bags.

FURIKAKE CHEX MIX

Furikake Chex Mix image

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 box Crispix or Chex cereal
1/2 bags Pretzel Sticks
1/4 box Honey Comb cereal
1/2 bags Bugles
1/2 box Honey Nut Cheerios
1/2 cup Butter
1/2 cup Karo Syrup or any light corn syrup
1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Vegetable Oil or Canola Oil
2 tablespoon Soy Sauce
1 bottle Furikake Seaweed and Seasame Seed Seasoning

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven at 250 degrees
  • In a sauce pan, heat butter, corn syrup, vegetable oil, soy sauce and sugar, until the sugar dissolves. Let cool.
  • Pour cereal into a foil baking pan and toss. If you plan to reuse the baking pan, line it with foil before because cereal does get stuck on the bottom.
  • Pour butter-syrup mixture over the cereal and toss gently.
  • Sprinkle furikake evenly and toss.
  • Bake at 250 for 1 hour, tossing ever 15 mins.
  • Cool and store in an air-tight container
  • You can substitute the cereal and chips with your favorites; I use whatever I have in the cabinet. I've done different mixes with Cheerios, Bugles, honey-roasted peanuts, etc., "broke the mouth," deliciousness!

  • Put the cereal in a large (wide and shallow is better than deep and skinny if you can find it) bowl. Recruit an extra set of hands, or prepare to pick up and put down different things a bunch of times. While continuously tossing with a heat-proof rubber spatula, drizzle the syrup all over the cereal, pausing occasionally to sprinkle on some furikake. Even coverage is the key here.

FURIKAKE CHEX MIX RECIPE - LIVING WITH THE LIUS

  • Preheat the oven to 250ºF. Position the oven racks to the upper third and lower third positions. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Set them aside.
  • Start melting the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Keep heating the butter after it has melted. You’ll notice that the melted butter froths up, which is a bit distracting because you can’t tell if the butter is browning at this phase. Just give everything a stir. After a while, the butter will bubble feverishly and create a pleasant popping sound for about a minute. Wait a little longer and the butter will start to turn a golden color. Stir the butter frequently to keep it from burning. Then, the butter bits on the bottom will start to turn brown, like the color of coffee grounds. You want to turn off the heat right before the bits turn black, an indication that you’ve left the butter in there for too long. This entire process should take about 4 to 5 minutes after the butter has melted. Turn off the heat.
  • Take out 2 large bowls. Divide the corn chex, pretzels and nuts between the 2 bowls. Mix up the contents in each bowl. Divide the syrup mixture between the two bowls. Stir to coat the dry ingredients with the syrup. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of furikake in each bowl. Stir again to distribute the furikake.
