Kids will love the "yuck" factor of eating worms, but everyone will appreciate that these dressed-down versions of sausage and peppers are also quite yummy.

Time 40m

Yield 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 12

6 strips bacon, chopped
One 14-ounce package foot-long hotdogs (8 hotdogs), each cut into 6 strips lengthwise
3 medium red and/or yellow bell peppers, cut into 1/4-inch-wide slices (about 3 cups)
1 large red onion, halved and cut into 1/4-inch-wide slices (about 3 cups)
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 cup chicken broth
1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce
6 hoagie rolls, split
12 slices provolone (about 6 ounces)

Steps:

  • Cook the bacon in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until crisp, about 6 minutes. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain.
  • Cook the hot dogs in the same skillet in 2 batches over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until curled and golden, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain. Preheat the oven broiler.

WORMS ON A BUN WITH ZOMBIE SAUCE

Worms on a Bun With Zombie Sauce image

From what I understand, Heinz carries a line of colored ketchups, one being called Funky Purple and one called Blastin' Green, which are a big hit with kids. Well, this is a fun Halloweeny recipe to get the kids involved...edible wormy hot dogs on a bun topped with purple ketchup. As the recipe specifies, if you can't find the Funky Purple ketchup, make your own with a few drops of blue food coloring.

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 20m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 (16 ounce) package hot dogs
6 hamburger buns
funky purple Heinz ketchup (or regular ketchup with blue food color added)

Steps:

  • Bring about 6 cups of water to a boil. Meanwhile, slice the hot dogs in half lengthwise, then slice each half into thin lengthwise strips.
  • Drop the hot dog slices into the boiling water. Stir occasionally until the water returns to the boil and hot dog stips curl. Remove the pan from the heat and drain the hot dog worms. Arrange the hot worms on the hamburger buns and serve topped with zombie sauce (purple ketchup).
  • Note: The hot dogs may, also, be microwaved or grilled to achieve the same curled results.

FRIED WORM SANDWICHES

Fried Worm Sandwiches image

So much fun for Halloween. The kids love them, and it actually is a tasty way to enjoy a hotdog because the strips brown on all sides. Toasting buns is optional, but we like them that way.

Provided by kitchenslave03

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 15m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 turkey hot dogs or 4 other hot dogs, your preference
4 hot dog buns or 4 hamburger buns
1 tablespoon butter, softened
assorted condiments

Steps:

  • Slice hotdogs in half lengthwise, then each half into thirds lengthwise to make 6 strips from each hotdog. Make a few shallow cuts along the length of each strip on the "skin" side. This will help them curl into worms as they cook.
  • Open hotdog buns and thinly spread butter on the cut sides of buns.
  • Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Toast buns, cut side down in skillet til browned and toasty. You may need to do this in batches. Remove buns from skillet and keep warm.
  • Place hotdog strips in same hot skillet. Toss and cook til curly, hot, and browned to your family's liking. Serve strips on toasted buns and top with desired condiments.
