Categories     Food & Cooking     Appetizers

Yield Makes 40

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 cup panko or plain dried breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1 pound bocconcini (bite-size fresh mozzarella balls)
2 cups vegetable oil
Tomato sauce, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Place flour in a bowl. In another bowl, beat eggs. In a third bowl, combine panko with thyme. Season each with salt and pepper. Working with 2 bocconcini at a time, dredge in flour, shaking off excess, coat in egg, and roll in breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
  • In a small saucepan, heat vegetable oil over medium-high until pinch of breadcrumbs sizzles and floats to the top when added. Fry bocconcini, 4 at a time, until golden brown, turning occasionally, 2 minutes per batch. With a slotted spoon, transfer balls to paper towels to drain and season with salt. Keep warm in oven and repeat with remaining bocconcini. Serve with tomato sauce for dipping.

What's better than cheese? Fried cheese balls! Only three ingredients in this easy, cheesy appetizer that's crunchy on the outside while melted and gooey on the inside.

Provided by Rebekah Garcia Kalinowski

Categories     Snacks

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 cups shredded gouda cheese, (8 ounces)
1 egg, or 2 egg whites
2 tablespoons cornstarch, or all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cracker crumbs, for dredging (optional)
vegetable oil, for frying
your favorite sauce, for dipping

Steps:

  • With an electric mixer or by hand, mix the cheese, egg and cornstarch (or flour) in a large bowl until a soft dough forms. Scoop 2 teaspoons of dough and roll into a ball. If desired, roll balls in cracker crumbs for an extra crispy coating. Refrigerate cheese balls until thoroughly chilled, about 30 minutes. In a medium frying pan, heat oil over high heat (350°F for deep frying). Fry cheese balls until golden brown, turning once, about 30-60 seconds per side. Drain on paper towels. • Set out 3 small bowls. Put the flour in one. Beat the egg and milk together in the second. Mix the bread crumbs, Parmesan, and rosemary in the third. Add salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Drain the mozzarella balls and dry them on paper towels. Dip the cheese balls first in the flour, then the egg, then the bread crumbs, tossing well to get an even coating. I double dipped the balls back into the egg and once more into the crumbs to get a nice complete coating. Do this for all the balls, and set on a tray.
  • In a small saucepan with high sides, heat at least 2 inches of oil over medium heat. If you have a thermometer, you're aiming for around 330--340F.
  • Working in small batches, drop the balls into the hot oil and let them fry to a golden brown, about a minute or so. You don't want the cheese to ooze out, so watch them carefully. Toss the balls gently with a spoon to make sure they don't stick and they get evenly cooked. Lift them out with a slotted spoon and set them on a rack while you cook the rest.
