OAMC HOMEMADE DOG FOOD

OAMC Homemade Dog Food image

Once a month cooking (OAMC) for the canine member of your family! For a 50lb dog this makes enough quantity for 2 weeks, double it or make two batches to stock your freezer with a month's supply of highly nutritional dog food. My 9-month old black-mouth cur rescue dog was a very picky eater and losing weight before I started making him this homemade dog food. I researched canine nutritional needs and combined recipes to come up with this recipe, keeping the proportions and nutrients inline with recommendations I found online. Vegetables should either be chopped to small pieces or pureed because dogs do not chew their food so large pieces will pass through undigested. Overcook the rice and vegetables, the softer the better! Satisfies the fussiest of eaters, every dog that has tried this recipe has licked his/her chomps in gratitude and licked his/her bowl clean! Rivals the most expensive commercial dog foods in nutritional value at a fraction of the cost!

Time 2h

Yield 42 cups, 14 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

24 cups water
8 cups brown rice
2 lbs ground turkey
2 (15 ounce) cans mackerel, chopped
2 cups carrots, grated
1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach
1 (16 ounce) package frozen broccoli and cauliflower, chopped
1 (16 ounce) package frozen peas (may substitute with french-cut green beans)
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin
16 ounces ricotta cheese
3/4 cup flax seed, ground in a coffee grinder

Steps:

  • In a large stockpot bring water to a boil, add brown rice, ground turkey and grated carrots, return to boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook for 40-50 minutes, until water is absorbed.
  • Thaw and chop or puree cauliflower and broccoli mix, add chopped canned fish, with juices, and remaining vegetables to rice/turkey/carrots mixture. Heat until all ingredients are soft and mushy, adding more water if necessary. Set aside to cool.
  • Stir ground flax into ricotta/cottage cheese and then stir the cheese/flax mixture, along with the pumpkin, into the rice/turkey/fish/vegetables mixture.
  • For a 50lb dog fill freezer bags with 2.5 cup portions, freeze.
  • Thaw in refrigerator for 24hrs before feeding time. Daily portions can be divided into two meals.

15 DOLLAR/WEEK DOG FOOD

15 Dollar/Week Dog Food image

My recipe I'm developing for my little darlings to see if we can affordably cook for them instead of having to worry about them eating rat poison. Adding up the cost of all ingredients, it adds up to around 15.00/week, which is the most I can afford to spend! This makes enough to keep 2 55 pound dogs happy and fed for a week. You still need a supplement, one with a good amount of calcium and phosporus and zinc, but I did spend hours amending this recipe to make it match a 55 lb dog's nutritional needs-I just couldnt get enough zinc, calcium or phosphorus! I left a little wiggle room as far as calories-around 300 calories/day extra for treats, dog friendly table scraps, etc. My dogs adore this! It's important to use soybean oil or (even better) safflower oil, as this oil contains a high amount of linoleic acid, which dogs need.

Time 1h30m

Yield 14 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 1/2 cups dried black beans
1 1/2 cups dried red kidney beans
1 (16 ounce) can sweet potatoes
3 cups dry lentils
1 lb ground turkey
2 lbs chicken gizzards
2 1/2 cups brown rice
2 1/2 cups white rice
2 cups oats
1 lb frozen spinach
1/2 lb frozen carrots
1/2 lb frozen peas
2 cups blackstrap molasses
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
1/4 cup flax seed
3 cups powdered milk
1 banana
1/4 cup soybean oil

Steps:

  • Cook the beans and the rice until they are nice and soft. For this step, I usually use a slowcooker-add beans, rice, and enough water to cook(this filled up mine completely, so I really didn't bother to measure.) No soaking necessary, just let them cook for about 4-5 hours.
  • Mince chicken gizzards. Again, gadgets make life easy here-I recommend a food processor.
  • Pour soybean oil into a very large stockpan. Add gizzards and turkey. Simmer until meat is cooked.
  • Add lentils, oats, approximately 4 cups water(I eyeball this also), and simmer until lentils are soft, about 15 minutes.
  • Add everything else, simmer til veggies are heated through.
  • Mix beans and rice with meat and vegetable mixture, put in large container to go in fridge or divide into smaller portions and freeze some for later.

MAMA PORKPIE'S DOG FOOD FOR LITTLE FATTIES

Mama Porkpie's Dog Food for Little Fatties image

Just what it says. Check with your vet first. I have had many Chihuahuas over the last 10 years (I'm involved with rescue) who have tended toward obesity, and this diet has helped them get fit and trim. As long as they still have healthy teeth you should still feed them a good quality "lite" kibble and this is as a supplement. It is not quite as dense as commercial food. My dogs are quite small, and normally eat 1/4 cup kibble twice a day. When they are on this diet, I feed them 1/4 cup of this along with about 1/2 the kibble they usually eat (approximately 2 tablespoons). Please note, certain foods are toxic to dogs; NEVER add onions or garlic to this recipe. Garlic is less dangerous than onions and some people will tell you that it's actually beneficial for your pets' health. I prefer to err on the side of safety for their sake so I say please do not add it to their food. As for the vegetables, my babies love green beans, beets, carrots, peas, spinach, mixed vegetables and lima beans, among others. The important thing is to use a variety and if using canned, they must be the kind that have NO SALT ADDED.

Time 1h45m

Yield 4-5 quarts, 10-40 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 1/2 lbs ground chicken (2 20 oz. packages.) or 2 1/2 lbs ground turkey (2 20 oz. packages.)
4 (15 ounce) cans no-salt-added vegetables
1 1/2 cups raw brown rice
1 bunch fresh parsley

Steps:

  • This recipe, as is, yields approximately 4-5 quarts, which is more than a small or medium-sized dog can consume while it remains good in the refrigerator. Therefore, the first step is to go to the dollar store and buy 8-10 pint-sized freezer containers. Heck, spend a lot more money and buy Tupperware if you want. Or if you are particularly ambitious, pack the finished product into canning jars and seal them. I prefer to just freeze it in pint containers until ready for use.
  • Open the cans of veggies and drain the liquid into the largest measuring cup you have, as much as possible. You should get about 3 cups of liquid but if not, add water to make exactly 3 cups.
  • Put the liquid into a 5-quart dutch oven on the the stove and bring to a boil.
  • Add the brown rice, stir, cover, and turn to low heat. Set the timer for 45 minutes. If it gets done before you are done with the next 2 steps, just move it aside somewhere off the heat without removing the lid or disturbing it in any way.
  • While you are waiting on the rice, cook the chicken or turkey meat in a frying pan until completely done. Transfer it into a fine-mesh colander and place in the sink to let the liquid drain out while the rice is cooking.
  • If you are using vegetables that have pieces larger than 1/2" then you need to use this time to cut them down further. For example, my dogs love beets but the only salt-free variety I can find are sliced beets. I chop the slices into small dice, and I do the same with the green beans.
  • Also use this time to prepare the parsley. This part is important. First clean it as you normally would, then remove all the large stems so that what you have left are just the tiny sprigs. Then transfer the sprigs to your food processor. If you don't have one, get out your biggest, sharpest knife and start chopping. The parsley needs to be VERY finely chopped. If not, you will find it all over the floor after Fido's feeding time. Babies don't like the texture of whole parsley and will spit it out. It is, however, good for their breath and digestion and it's very low-cal.
  • When the rice is done and has been taken off the heat, open the lid and add the meat, stir well.
  • Add all the vegetables, stir well.
  • Add the parsley. Mix thoroughly.
  • Pack the mixture into pint-sized containers and store properly, keeping one out for immediate use.
