French Toast Stack image

A marvelous brunch, perfect for Christmas, and easier to both make and clean up after than regular French toast. This is perfect topped with a little powdered sugar and maple syrup.

18 slices bread (wheat, white, whatever you make sandwiches with)
1 (24 ounce) can apple pie filling, mashed
1 cup raisins, plumped
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
10 eggs
1 (8 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12 ounce) evaporated milk
1 cup maple syrup
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons nutmeg

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350; bake whole slices of bread on cookie sheet until dry, toasting minimally. (Or use a toaster, or lie them out over night - just dehydrate them).
  • Spread cream cheese on six slices; lay flat in greased 13 x 9 inch pan.
  • Sandwich with another six slices.
  • Spread pie filling over second layer; sprinkle over plumped raisins.
  • Top with six more slices of bread.
  • In large mixing bowl, beat together the eggs, milks, vanilla, syrup, and spices.
  • Pour over casserole.
  • Refridgerate overnight.
  • Place pan in oven before turning it on; turn oven to 350 and bake for 55-60 minutes or until set.

I never liked French toast, but these sticks are the best. No need to have syrup or anything, they are good as-is.

2 large eggs
½ cup powdered sugar
¼ cup milk
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon brown sugar
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 slices white bread, cut into thirds
nonstick cooking spray

Steps:

  • Mix eggs, powdered sugar, milk, maple syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon together in a bowl with a fork until well blended. Dip each bread stick into the egg mixture.
  • Coat a skillet with nonstick spray and heat over medium heat. Place sticks in the hot skillet and cook until brown, 2 to 3 minutes; turn over and cook until browned on other side, 2 to 3 minutes more. Repeat with the second batch.

6 slices day-old Texas toast
4 large eggs
1 cup 2% milk
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup crushed cornflakes, optional
Confectioners' sugar, optional
Maple syrup

Steps:

  • Cut each piece of bread into thirds; place in an ungreased 13x9-in. dish. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon. Pour over bread; soak for 2 minutes, turning once. If desired, coat bread with cornflake crumbs on all sides. , Place in a greased 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Freeze until firm, about 45 minutes. Transfer to an airtight freezer container and store in the freezer., To use frozen French toast sticks: Place desired number on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 425° for 8 minutes. Turn; bake 10-12 minutes longer or until golden brown. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar if desired. Serve with syrup.
